"Jim Hurst is one of the most versatile and tasteful guitar players I know. Whether he's flailing the rhythm for an old time fiddle tune, laying down a funky groove, or finger picking a beautiful ballad, his playing is both impeccable and creative.  Accompanying this instrumental virtuosity is a rich and expressive voice with a surprising range."  Mark Schatz

To listen to Jim Hurst is to be amazed by his tasteful and flawless performances.  Perfect timing and tone and his unusual picking style has enchanted guitar players from the novice to his peers.  It’s no surprise, then, that his musical mastery began with a musical upbringing paving the way for a winding and varied career path.

Born into a musical family, Jim spent his youth playing guitar under the influences of flat-picking greats Tony Rice, Doc Watson, George Shuffler, and Clarence White.  But the finger-style playing of Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed was the “turn in the road” for Jim.  This amalgam of impact defined his technique.

Using his early years to hone his style, Jim’s guitar work and harmony vocals for Holly Dunn’s Rio Band brought his talent to both the national and international stage.  Then in 1992, going electric, he played guitar with Trisha Yearwood, touring extensively and appearing on numerous radio and television shows.  He also performed with Travis Tritt, and Sara Evans, whose 1998 RCA release No Place That Far features Jim’s vocals and acoustic guitar work.

Craving to play more bluegrass, Jim joined Grammy-nominated Claire Lynch and The Front Porch String Band in 1995, during which time he teamed up with bassist Missy Raines.  They began the duet Jim Hurst and Missy Raines while with Front Porch, but then broke off in 2000 to focus solely on their collaboration. Remaining faithful to their bluegrass roots, Jim and Missy explored other genres creating ground-breaking arrangements that wowed the bluegrass community.  Their partnership resulted in two Pinecastle Records, Two and Synergy , receiving critical acclaim and garnering them IBMA Guitar and Bass Player of the Year for 2001 and 2002.

Desiring greater freedom to create his own musical path, Jim left the Claire Lynch Band in 2010 to embark on a solo career.  Already seasoned with two solo recordings, Open Window and Second Son, his latest 2007 release, A Box of Chocolates, exhibits his deft guitar work and soothing vocals.  His shows meet with rave reviews as he astounds his audiences with his brilliant playing yet makes people feel right at home with his humble congenial and funny persona.  Jim is currently performing solo full time, both nationally and internationally, as well as teaching at camps and workshops in North America and Europe.  Additionally, his highly sought-after talent has led to side projects with other bluegrass greats, most recently Rob Ickes and David Grisman.  But his solo show, which allows his personal style and unique creativity to come through in spades, is what keeps his audiences mesmerized.

Flynn Cohen and the Deadstring Ensemble

notloB Folk Concerts

Thursday, October 20, 8pm
Loring-Greenough House
12 South Street
Jamaica Plain, MA
More info at the notloB website

Guitarist/composer Flynn Cohen leads his own band of string geniuses performing original multi-genre acoustic music. Primarily instrumental, they combine influences ranging from Irish traditional music, old-time appalachian, bluegrass, folk-rock, and early music. The band consists of some of the finest and most experienced acoustic plucked-string players in America.

FLYNN COHEN – guitar/mandolin/vocals

Acoustic Guitarist Flynn Cohen has performed all over the world with many notable acts in traditional and contemporary acoustic music. He can be seen on concert and festival stages with the neo-trad folk band Annalivia, legendary Irish Accordion player John Whelan, fellow trad guitar player Matt Heaton, modern bluegrass band Tony Watt & Southeast Expressway, and his own group of acoustic string wizards, TheDeadstring Ensemble.

Flynn has also performed with HALALI, The Sevens, Aoife Clancy, Cathie Ryan, Lawrence Nugent, Skip Healy, Joe Derrane and Frank Farrell, John McGann, Matt Glaser, Adrienne Young, Jake & Taylor Armerding, Gail Davies, Gilly Martin, Malibu Storm, Bruce MacGregor, Lissa Schneckenburger, Laura Cortese, Mark Simos, Women of Ireland, The Vancouver Symphony, the Orchestra of Indian Hill, Revels, and Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, among others.

He studied Music at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England and at Mills College in Oakland, California and now teaches in the Music Dept at Keene State College in New Hampshire, as well as The Music Emporium in Lexington, Massachusetts.

JOHN McGANN – guitar/mandolin
John McGann is a Professor of Strings at Berklee College of Music, 1985 National Mandolin Champion, and has a long resumé of international tours and recordings with Celtic Fiddle Festival, The Wayfaring Strangers, The Boston Edge and many others. Complete bio: http://www.johnmcgann.com/bio.html

MATT HEATON
 – guitar/bouzouki

Though he studied classical guitar at Northwestern University (MMus) and Italy, played rock in Chicago, and tango in Denver, it is Boston’s vibrant Irish music scene where he has made his musical home. What began as an obsession with an unlabeled cassette tape (which later turned out to be “The Planxty Collection”) and a courtship with a young Irish flute player named Shannon, has led to a vibrant Irish music performance career. In addition to his duo work with wife Shannon, he is highly sought after as accompanist, and has performed with traditional luminaries Aoife Clancy, Robbie O’Connell, Emily Smith, and the Boys of the Lough.

DANNY NOVECK – guitar/fiddle
Danny has worked as both a fiddler and guitar accompanist with such trad music luminaries as Liz Carroll, John Williams, Tony DMarco, and John Whelan. He has a PhD in Anthropology that took him Mexico to study the fiddle music of the Tarahumara Indians. Danny teaches at the Boston branch of Comhaltas music school and is the composer of the well-known session tune "Sligo Creek".

The Bee Eaters, Somerville, 4/7

notloB Folk Concerts is pleased to welcome The Bee Eaters on Thursday, April 7, doors 7:30, concert 8:00, to Unity Somerville, 6 William Street (corner College Ave., 3 blocks north of Davis Square), Somerville.

“(The Bee Eaters) combine chamber music’s finely calibrated arrangements with Bluegrass’s playful virtuosity and pop music’s melodic resourcefulness.”
The Boston Globe

“The Bee Eaters are the instrumental cream of the brand new string nation.  Harking back to the ‘grand old days’ when new virtuosos seemed to spring on the scene fully formed with a whole repertoire of brilliant music nobody had ever heard before, somehow these kids have absorbed everything we had to offer and alchemized it into a new musical world.”
Darol Anger

“The Bee Eaters’ extraordinary instrumentation …immediately sets them apart from the rest of the progressive string band world.  But this band is no novelty. The textures are rich, the tunes are engaging, and the playing is masterful.”
Noam Pikelny  (Punch Brothers)

Banjo wizard Tony Trischka has called the Bee Eaters “bodaciously brilliant,” and internationally renowned bassist Edgar Meyer  says it’s “a joy to hear both the exploration of this music… and the emphasis on the simple beauty of the acoustic instruments.”

The Bee Eaters trace their roots back to musical traditions as diverse as bluegrass, Celtic, jazz and old-time.  While today’s new breed often produces an amalgamation of sounds and styles based on a distant view, the Bee Eaters were raised embedded in these traditions… raised to mold, meld, shape them and carry them forward, leaving their own indelible marks in the process.

Brother-sister duo Tristan and Tashina Clarridge, long known and lauded by those steeped in the American fiddle tradition are joined by hammer dulcimer virtuoso Simon Chrisman and guitar prodigy Courtney Hartman.

Tashina, the 2005 Grand National Fiddle Champion, has toured with Mark O’Connor and Tony Trischka and has performed at Carnegie Hall as a part of MacArthur Fellow/Grammy-winning bassist Edgar Meyer’s Young Artists program.  Multi-instrumentalist brother Tristan is a truly innovative cellist and 5-time Grand National Fiddle Champion. His talents have been sought by Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Bruce Molsky and Cape Breton fiddle phenomenon Natalie MacMaster.  In addition to performing with the Bee Eaters, he tours internationally with Crooked Still.

A phenomenal guitarist who began her musical journey as a fiddler at age 3, Courtney Hartman is at the forefront of a new generation of acoustic musicians.  She has performed in Scotland, Slovakia, Italy, and throughout the US, won numerous flatpicking championships, and is currently studying on scholarship at Berklee College of Music.  Matt Glaser, fiddle legend and chair of Berklee’s American Roots Music program called Courtney “an extraordinary bluegrass guitarist and a fluid, inventive improviser… one of the finest musicians i have ever had the privilege of working with.”

Hammer dulcimer virtuoso Simon Chrisman brings an unusual style to (what has heretofore been thought of as) an instrument of limited range and technique.  His inventive virtuosic touch and sophisticated rhythmic sensibilities are redefining the instrument and earning the attention of musicians from all over the world.  He has performed with Darol Anger and Mike Marshall, opened for Bill Frisell and, at the tender age of 16, was a scholarship guest artist at the prestigious Augusta Heritage Festival.

Since their formation in 2008 (with original member Wesley Corbett), the Bee Eaters have been on a trajectory of growth, personal and musical.  Their ensemble work has taken on mature, textured and nuanced tones, as their compositions have become more thoughtful and intricate.  With Tashina’s delicate fiddle and Tristan’s grounding cello wrapped around Simon’s ethereal dulcimer and Courtney’s intricate guitar, they have created a never-before-heard sound in American music.  No tricks.  No pyrotechnics.  Four instrumental voices, united in their musical exploration.

Listening to the Bee Eaters is like eavesdropping on a spirited, private conversation.  As wonderful as their recorded music is, watching the Bee Eaters in live performance is an exercise in safe danger.  They parry and thrust, challenging each other at every moment.  Their focus on their music and on each other is tight and complete.  Their melodic lines and rhythmic phrases dance (and sometimes roil) over, under and around each other.  There is sometimes dissonance but always an ultimate harmony.

With a new CD set for release this spring, the Bee Eaters continue to travel the country performing in clubs, concert halls and festivals, evangelists for their new American acoustic sound.

Perhaps Tony Trischka said it best: “Their impressive ensemble work… leaves me breathless.  Their music excites, heals and enriches.  Listen often.”

Yes, listen often.
