On Saturday, January 17 notloB will end its 6-year hiatus from the Park Avenue Congregational Church, returning to the acoustically-alive wooden hall, where in 2008 it presented several concerts, including The Folk Arts Quartet, The Boston Boys, Joy Kills Sorrow and Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers.The concert will be a benefit for the Old Schwamb Mill.

Then on Sunday, January 18 Brittany and Nic will be presented a second time, at Carriage House of Violins' beautiful and intimate (just 50 seats) performance space.

California-born Brittany Haas is widely regarded as one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation. She grew up honing her craft in fiddle camps nationwide, and came to her unique sound through the old-time fiddling of Bruce Molsky and the innovative stylings of Darol Anger. A prodigious youth, she began touring with Darol's Republic of Strings at the age of 14. She simultaneously studied baboons in the evolutionary biology department of Princeton University (and minoring in music performance, composing with professor Dan Trueman) and joined seminal chamber-grass band Crooked Still. She has toured with them since, and also performed with Yonder Mountain String Band, Tony Trischka, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas (her cellist sister), Abigail Washburn, and The Waybacks. She played her fiddle on Steve Martin's Grammy Award-winning CD, "The Crow," and performed in his band on Letterman and SNL. She released her debut self-titled solo album at 17, produced by Darol Anger and featuring Bruce Molsky, Mike Marshall, Alison Brown and others. Currently residing in Nashville, she is the co-leader of the Brittany Haas/Dan Trueman band who released their debut record "CrissCross" in 2011. She also plays in a fiddle duo with Lauren Rioux, an all-girl indie old-time band called The Fundies, "4tet" with Cleek Schrey (hardanger fiddle/pump organ), Jordan Tice (guitar) and Nic Gareiss (percussive dance), a trio with Jordan Tice and Paul Kowert (bassist in the Punch Brothers), and a duo with Kai Welch.

Michigan-born dancer, musician, and dance researcher Nic Gareiss has been described by the Irish Times as “the human epitome of the unbearable lightness of being,” and "the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. His choreographic work re-imagines movement as a musical activity, recasting dance as medium that appeals to both eyes and ears. Gareiss draws from many percussive dance traditions to weave together a dance technique facilitating his love of improvisation, traditional footwork vocabulary, and musical collaboration. He has performed with many of the luminaries of contemporary traditional music and dance, including The Chieftains, The Gloaming, Darol Anger, Dervish, Buille, Liz Carroll, Genticorum, Bill Frisell, Yvon Mimeault, poet Aonghas MacNeacail, Step Afrika!, Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, Rhythm in Shoes, Bruce Molsky, Alasdair Fraser, and Martin Hayes. 

In 2011 Gareiss was commissioned by the Cork Opera House to create and perform two new solo percussive dance pieces to celebrate the 75th birthday of composer Steve Reich. In 2013, he served as community liaison for the Wheatland Music Organization's 40th Anniversary production 'Carry it on...', supervising a cast of 70 non-professional dancers from the state of Michigan. He received a Traditional Arts Commission from the Irish Arts Council to create a new duo fiddle and dance work with Caoimhín Ó Raghalliah. The resulting piece, MICE WILL PLAY had a sell-out run at the Project Arts Centre during the 2013 Dublin Fringe Festival. 

Gareiss has concertized in Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada, and New Zealand and continues to tour and teach internationally, working with dance communities and presenting solo percussive dance choreography. Nic holds degrees in anthropology and music from Central Michigan University and recently completed his MA in ethnochoreology at the University of Limerick.

Salt Stage Presents both local artists and those on a migratory path through the state of Maine in intimate portraiture: musicians, poets, performers, chefs, farmers, painters, sculptors and more. These performances are archived live without over-dubbing or post manipulation unless insisted upon by the artist in the performance. A high resolution recording system and one or two camera angles capture a cinematic feeling full of both visual and sonic tonality, paired with simple & clean editing . When not outside on location, windows are often left open to incorporate gulls, rainfall and other sonic signatures of Maine. Vintage lenses are also integral to enhance the filmic look of the vignettes. Described as “the new face of Scottish fiddling in the USA”, Katie McNally grew up steeped in the vibrant Scottish and Cape Breton music community in Boston and is the 2009 New England Scottish Fiddle Champion. She was a student of Hanneke Cassel and has performed at venues such as the Newport Folk Festival, The Freight and Salvage, The Barns at Wolf Trap, Symphony Space, and various folk venues throughout the country. Katie performs regularly with all-female Celtic band Long Time Courting, has been a member of the New England fiddle supergroup Childsplay since 2009, and joined world-renowned Galician bagpiper Carlos Núñez on his tour of North America in 2012. 

In her New England tour, Katie will be teaming up with two of the most innovative voices in acoustic music in the US, genre-bending pianist Neil Pearlman and Madison-based violist Shauncey Ali. Katie’s evocative and melodic playing combined with Shauncey’s powerful harmonies and counterpoint—all anchored by Neil’s rhythmically driving piano accompaniment—creates a uniquely arresting take on traditional music.

Boston-based fiddler & step dancer Adrianna Ciccone is quickly establishing herself as a distinctive voice in the new-acoustic music scene. Her style, while rooted in the Ottawa Valley & Québecois fiddle traditions, continues to be inspired by the many different regional fiddles styles of Canada and the world including Appalachian, Métis, Cape Breton, Irish, Scottish & Scandinavian music.

This distinctive style has brought the Timmins, ON native many awards and achievements.  She is a Maritime Open Fiddle Champion & American Grand Masters Fiddle Championship Finalist.  Adrianna’s arrangement of Québecois fiddle tunes for string orchestra was played by Berklee World Strings during their 2014 United States tour, in which she was a featured soloist. 

  

Adrianna is also an active & experienced instructor.  For nearly a decade she has been passing on Canada's rich musical heritage to students of all ages and levels.  She maintains a lively studio in both Northern Ontario & Boston, as well as throughout North America via Skype Video lessons. 

 

In May 2014 Adrianna graduated magna cum laude from the Berklee College of Music with a degree in Professional Music & a minor in American Roots Music.  She is recording her debut studio album in January 2015.

Allison de Groot is one of Canada’s top claw-hammer banjo players.  She combines love and passion for old-time music, technical skill and a creative approach to the banjo forming her own sound – unique and full of personality. In 2008, Allison founded the Canadian country quartet Oh My Darling, which has toured all over the world from Trafalgar Square in London, The Living Room in New York City, to mainstage slots at festivals like the Winnipeg Folk Festival and Tønder Festival in Denmark.  Allison has made pilgrimages to the Appalachians, attending the Old Time Appalachian String Band Festival in West Virginia and immersing herself in old-time communities in North Carolina. Although firmly rooted in old-time and traditional music, Allison has shown her ability to collaborate and create outside this genre, pushing the boundaries of the clawhammer banjo.

In 2012, Allison was awarded the Slaight Family Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. where she has studied intensively with Bruce Molsky and Wes Corbett. Allison is involved in both the American and Canadian music scenes, and splits her time between Boston, MA and Winnipeg, MB.

Andy Reiner, an award-winning fiddler, composer and educator originally from Lexington, MA, began playing at age five with the Reiner Family Band. He has since developed his own style through creative, rhythmic melodies, and thoughtful fusing of world styles. Earning a BM in Violin Performance from Berklee College of Music in Boston launched Andy into a flurry of touring and teaching around the globe - including Heavy Metal with Devil in the Kitchen, Folk/Hip-Hop with FiddleFoxx, Swedish/Appalachian with Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers, Electronic/Celtic with Firecloud, and Bluegrass with The Earth Stringband, which toured Southeast Asia on the 2011 American Music Abroad tour for the State Department and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Andy currently tours as a solo artist and composes fiddle tunes, songs, new works, and arrangements for string orchestra. He teaches improvisation, composition and fiddle styles privately and at music camps across the US. Andy’s compositions have been performed by the Berklee World Strings at the Kennedy Center, the Berklee Performance Center, and national ASTA conventions.

One of the youngest instructors at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Anick is rapidly making a name for himself in the world of jazz violin and mandolin. In addition to leading his own ensemble and performing with the Rhythm Future Quartet, Anick has been touring and recording with Grammy award-winning Nashville guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson since 2008 when he was recruited while still a senior at Hartt Conservatory.

Mali Obomsawin is an upright bassist from the woodlands of western Maine. She was raised on folk music and now studies jazz and classical music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mali's main gig is playing in a trio with songstresses Ellie Buckland and Isa Burke, and she has also shared the stage with Stash Wyslouch of the Deadly Gentlemen, Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards, and the Western Den. Mali's goal as a bass player is to bridge the gaps between jazz, classical and folk music in the grooviest way possible. When not playing bass, she has been known to sing, mess around on various other stringed instruments, write her own songs, and dance clumsily.
