JORDAN TICE AND SIMON CHRISMAN

You may be aware of Lord Geoffrey by last Fall's 8 concert series of rising young talent enrolled at Berklee and NEC*, but he has another side, that of presenting established nationally touring

musicians (Darol Anger, Rushad Eggleston and Paul Geremia, just to name a few). In that light, on Wednesday, April 2 we are presenting two top-shelf string players, JORDAN TICE and SIMON CHRISMAN!

JORDAN TICE
Jordan Tice is a guitarist and composer from Annapolis, MD who currently makes his home in Brooklyn, NY. The son of two bluegrass musicians, he grew up playing with various bluegrass bands around Maryland until 2005 when he enrolled at Towson University to study music on full scholarship. In addition to his studies, the next four years were also marked by performances and recordings with the likes of Mark Schatz and friends, Frank Wakefield, Darol Anger, and "Corbett, Chrisman, and Tice" featuring Wes Corbett on banjo and Simon Chrisman on hammered dulcimer. Jordan's collaboration with Corbett and Chrisman yielded a self titled record which was listed as one of the Chicago Tribune's top 5 "best compact discs of the year" in the bluegrass/newgrass category in 2008. Also in 2008, Jordan released his second record as a leader entitled "Long Story". The record, featuring all Tice originals as well as an all-star band of Casey Driessen, Noam Pikelny, Andy Hall, and Mark Schatz, brought about rave reviews from acoustic music publications for its "engaging and melodic tunes" and "inspired solos" (Bluegrass Unlimited) as well as being a "very musical album" (The Bluegrass Blog). Other highlights include being featured on the cover of the January 2011 Flatpicking Guitar Magazine and performing the music of actor/comedian Steve Martin for Shakespeare's "As You Like It" at New York City's esteemed "Shakespeare in the Park" in summer 2012. 
Jordan's current project, The Jordan Tice Trio, features Paul Kowert (Punch Brothers) on bass, and Simon Chrisman on hammered dulcimer. Their debut release "The Secret History" released in late 2011 has been praised as containing "exceptional craft" (Bluegrass Unlimited). In addition to performing with the trio, Jordan can be seen playing with Tony Trischka, the Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, The Dan Trueman/Brittany Haas Band, The Depue Brothers Band, Lily Henley, and Mariel Vandersteel.

SIMON CHRISMAN
Hammered dulcimer wizard Simon Chrisman tours with the Bee Eaters, has performed with Mike Marshall and Darol Anger, opened for Bill Frisell, and at 16 was a scholarship guest artist at the Augusta Heritage Festival in West Virginia. His sophisticated rhythmic sense and ingenious tonal flexibility, on an instrument usually considered limited, has created a buzz among musicians all over the world.

Fiddle Deis comes to Brandeis, 3/15-17

FOLK/CELTIC/JAZZ/CAJUN/KLEZMER/BAROQUE/BLUEGRASS, etc.

Thanks to Barbara Cassidy for alerting me to this. "Fiddle Festival at Brandeis University, Waltham, is coming up in March. Three days of workshops and performances."

What a lineup! I am posting this today because you will want to get tickets before it sells out.

Go all three days if you can, but if you cannot I highly recommend, because 100% of the musicians have either performed in my own notloB Folk Concerts series or have very close ties, going Friday night. But if you prefer jazz, Saturday looks to be the day. But if you prefer Baroque / classical. Sunday is your day.

A word of warning, unless the situation has changed, parking at Brandeis can be a challenge.

Jeremy Kittel is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the nation’s most creative young musicians. Classically trained, he grew up in the Irish, folk and jazz music scenes of Ann Arbor and Detroit. As a youth he often traveled to Ireland and Scotland to further his studies of traditional music. In addition to performing with his own band and as a soloist with orchestras, Jeremy tours worldwide as the newest member of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet.

The 24-year-old fiddler/violinist/composer has earned an impressive list of accolades including multiple U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championships, Alternative Styles Awards from the American String Teachers Association, and six Detroit Music Awards for Outstanding Folk Artist, Jazz Recording, and Jazz Composer. Jeremy graduated at twenty from the University Of Michigan School Of Music and was awarded the Stanley Medal, their highest musical honor. He was the first recipient of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin, and he recorded as a soloist on the multiple Grammy Award-winning CD “Songs of Innocence and Experience” by William Bolcom. At twenty-three he earned a masters degree in Jazz Violin from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music.

Jeremy has performed at over a thousand concerts and festivals including the Kennedy Center, “A Prairie Home Companion,” the Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony, and Carnegie Hall. He has been guest artist with the Vancouver Symphony, Detroit Symphony, and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras; Mark O’Connor, and Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings. Jeremy has taught at many camps and schools including the International Music Academy in the Czech Republic, Swannanoa Gathering and Mark O’Connor Fiddle Camps. He also works with school orchestras nationwide in workshops and performances, focusing on developing students’ fiddling, jazz, and improvisation skills.

Jeremy’s first CD, “Celtic Fiddle,” was named “one of the top 20 Celtic albums of 2000” by the radio show Celtic Connections. His second, “Roaming,” took second place for Best Celtic Instrumental Album in an international competition. His most recent recording, “Jazz Violin,” won the 2006 Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Recording. His fourth CD, soon to be released, features special guests including Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile.
