Since 2007, notloB has presented >200 not-for-profit folk, Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, and progressive string concerts in unique venues throughout the greater Boston area, and in Harvard since 2019. Welcome back, Mark Schatz, who performed at notloB concert #215 on August 24, 2019. This performance will be outdoors; if inclement weather, it will be moved indoors.

 

A two-time winner of the IBMA Bass Player of the Year Award, Mark is best known for his contributions on some of the most iconic recordings in bluegrass by artists such as Tony Rice, Bela Fleck, John Hartford, Claire Lynch, Tim O’Brien, Sara Jarosz, and Nickel Creek. But Mark is also a master of the clawhammer banjo and is featured playing his own compositions on two solo projects on Rounder Records, BRAND NEW OLD TYME WAY and STEPPIN’ IN THE BOILER HOUSE. Mark is always ready to cut loose with some Southern Appalachian clogging and hambone, and his stagecraft was honed through a long association with the acclaimed Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, for whom he still serves as Musical Director.

“Mark Schatz - The Solo Concert” offers Mark the opportunity to engage an audience in a very personal way with his unique and animated charm and broad skill set. He pulls out all of the stops on banjo, bass and guitar, presenting songs, stories, and tunes, tapping on a board, dancing, and reciting poetry, offering a vaudevillian feast for the eyes and ears.

Always in demand both in the studio and on the road, Mark appears on Bela Fleck’s most recent Grammy nominated project, Rhapsody in Blue. He appears as well on an upcoming solo project by Rick Faris.

Mark currently resides in Berkeley, California with his wife, Lisa Berman-Schatz, who is a graphic designer and fellow musician.

ADMISSION is by free-will offering, suggested amounts: Adults $20-25, teens and seniors $10-15. Cash at the door.

 

VENUE: The concert will be presented at a private residence in Harvard, Massachusetts. The address will be shared when the reservation request is confirmed. Please bring a folding chair or blanket. BYOB / snacks.

 

CAPACITY: If the performance is outdoors, the capacity is 35. If, due to inclement weather, it has to be moved indoors, seating is limited to the first 20 reservation holders. The in/out decision will be made by 4pm and patrons informed via email.

HILLSDALE, NY. The Oldtone Roots Music Festival features three stages with traditional music performances, dances, workshops, contests, and children’s activities. The founders’ goal is to preserve American roots music and dance with an intimate and interactive festival that includes opportunities to engage with main stage artists in workshop settings. Jamming in the campground late into the night is encouraged. In the evenings festival goers and artists dance under a tent that perches over a spectacular view of the rolling upstate NY farm valley of Matt and Lisa Schober’s Cool Whisper Farm. It is not unusual to find main stage performers dancing in the dance tent or jamming late into the night in the camping areas. Caleb Klauder of the Foghorn String Band has this to say about Oldtone 19: “I’m going to the Oldtone Roots Music festival because their hearts are in the music and the music there has soul.”

The festival is unique amongst Roots music festivals for its popularity with the artists themselves as well as the attendees, who can often be heard talking about the “Oldtone vibe”.  Well known cajun Artist Jesse Lege (Bayou Brew) stated; “If I had to pick one best festival, and I have traveled to many, near and far....Oldtone is the biggest, most relaxed, friendliest little festival you’ll ever spend a weekend at... like having it in your own backyard.” 

The festival has a core of returning popular Oldtone veteran artists: the Foghorn String Band, Tuba Skinny, the Down Hill Strugglers, Jesse Lege & the Bayou Brew, Run Mountain, Tamar Korn, Travis Stuart, and the Russet Trio, all who have performed since 2016. This year the line up also includes well known bands and artists and exciting new acts: Alice Gerrard & the Piedmont Melody Makers, Roochie Toochie & the Ragtime Shepherd Kings, Bruce Molsky and Allison de Groot, Jerron Paxton, The Alex Leach Band, Sinner Friends, and more. Oldtone is known for its family friendly atmosphere with puppet shows and interactive entertainment for children. Local food and craft vendors add to the village feel of the four day long weekend festival, and this year, local craft beers from Big Elm, Chatham Brewery, S&S Farm Brewery, and Svendale will be a highlight as well as local hard cider, and wine from Millbrook Winery.

Oldtone Productions continue their  carefully curated old-time music line up with the return of some Oldtone favorites and some exciting new folks. Roots music fans will be delighted to hear that the Appalachian Mountain duo Anna & Elizabeth (recently featured in the New Yorker) will be bringing their harmonies and their art to the Hillsdale festival. Also new this year are Oldtime Blues artist Hubby Jenkins (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Creole artist and former member of The Pine Leaf Boys Cedric Watson, well known upright bass player Mike Bub (Del McCoury band). Other new artists include Five Mile Mountain Road (bluegrass), cajun fiddlers Joel Savoy and Kelli Jones, roots trio Pete’s Posse, and the Balkan Romani Gypsy duo Eva Salina and Peter Stan.

The returning lineup makes up Oldtone’s core, with some of the most exciting roots artists today. The Oldtone host band, is the well-known Foghorn String Band from Portland, OR, Oldtone’s favorite Cajun band Jesse Lege and the Bayou Brew will be returning to the Main and Dance Stages, as will the old time darlings Bill and the Belles. Bill and the Belles are the house band for Farm & Fun Time which is hosted by Radio Bristol producer and house band-leader Kris Truelsen, (the show is hot in the Roots music world right now). The Down Hill Strugglers are also making waves, and band member Jackson Lynch recently played the Half Moon with his band Jackson and the Janks, the Hudson hot spot that Oldtone partners with for their SuperTone promotional shows. Nora Brown, the young up and coming roots banjo player captured the festival’s hearts and minds last year with her appearance on the “tweener” stage and has a place on the Main Stage for 2018.

Oldtone organizer Kip Beacco stated; “I can’t begin to tell you about all the amazing artists we’ve got coming this, year, it’s breathtaking.”

Oldtone Productions was the brainchild of Kip Beacco, Matt Downing, and Jim Wright, musician dads who are dedicated to creating a fun, family friendly festival. Producer Jim Wright stated; ““We are aiming to be the picker’s favorite festival in the Northeast. We’ve got another killer lineup this year”.” said Jim Wright. The festival features exciting performances in Old-Time, Bluegrass, Swing Jazz, Country & Folk, with plenty of Contra, Cajun and Square dancing in the Oldtone Dance Tent.  Returning to the Oldtone Main Stage, Workshop and Dance Tents include Foghorn Stringband,  Jesse Legé, Down Hill Strugglers, Bradford Lee Folk, and Run Mountain. Adding to the pop up community for the weekend will be farm-to-festival vendors, instrument and clothing vendors, puppet shows and children’s activities. has announced its layout for 2017

For those who attended this tiny gem (as they say, "Think Winterhawk/Nobett Hill!") last year, you will see a huge improvement this year. The main stage is being moved away from the farm compound, to the area occupied last year by day parking. The workshop stage will be moved to the former main stage location.

But the best news is camping has been added closer to the main grounds, above the main stage! This means campers will be able to see and hear main stage acts from their sites!

We are having a lot of fun planning this years festival, and it is challenging and time-consuming to found a Roots Arts Organization. Oldtone Roots Music Festival: Unprecedented convergence of the best in American traditional music.

“Participation is Preservation”

(Great Barrington, MA, and Ancramdale, NY) - Festival producer Dads “Bet the Farm” on their passion for Old Time music!  All with young families of 2 young kids each, these guys aim to further bridge gaps in the modern roots music world.

The Oldtone Roots Music and Dance Festival is a new venture founded and produced by the dynamic trio of Kip Beacco, Matt Downing, and Jim Wright, well-known Northeastern artists in American Roots music world. This is the second year of the event featuring traditional Appalachian folk, bluegrass, hot swing, old-time country, brass, Cajun and contra music. The dates are September 8, 9, 10, & 11, 2016.

“We are creating a platform for traditional music to be experienced and enjoyed without some of the trappings of larger festivals. Oldtone Roots focuses on preserving the more traditional side of American Roots music through playing, learning, dancing, and singing. The 4-day camping festival will include classes and workshops, formal and informal jams, and contests. The festival celebrates traditional acoustic music with a down-to-earth, inclusive, and welcoming vibe.”

The informal motto of the festival is “Participation is Preservation”. The festival will include contra, square, and swing dancing, workshops, classes, and performances on three stages.  Known and respected artists of Old Time Music will be performing and teaching.

The event is an earth friendly family focused camping adventure on the stunning 150 acre Cool Whisper Working Family Farm in Hillsdale, NY. Cool Whisper is owned by Matt and Lisa Schober. Festival attendees will be able to see (from a distance) highland cattle amidst mountain views and rolling fields. Day tickets are also available.
