Folk, Blues, Classical and Jazz Funeral for ALL Passed WGBH Music Programs, Copley Square, 7/27

On July 5, hundreds turned out at the "public" radio WGBH studios in Brighton to hold a funeral for the reduction of WGBH jazz programming. A second funeral, not limited to just the passing of jazz but for all passed and endangered music forms (folk and blues were killed in 2009, classical was shuffled off to an inferior carrier in 2010, and Celtic, the only remaining form, could be next) will be held Friday in conjunction with the Boston Summer Arts Weekend on Friday, July 27 in Copley Square.

History:
11/09: WGBH cancels "Folk on WGBH" and "Blues on WGBH"
12/09: WGBH moves classical to an inferior transmitter and make it "classical lite".
7/12: WGBH fires Steve Schwartz (27 years) and relegates Eric Jackson (30 years) to weekend.
Coming soon, the cancellation of the one remaining music program,"Celtic Sojourn"?

Some history: On November 7, 2009, the  notloB Music blog raised the alert that WGBH was canceling the folk and blues programs, and predicted jazz and Celtic would follow in turn.

"notloB Music: WGBH drops folk and blues programs  Nov 07, 2009
Folk music has been a mainstay on WGBH for as long as I can remember. Acoustic artists are as popular as ever and in some ways even more popular then in days gone by. I don't get it. WGBH should be ashamed of itself..."

On June 20 learned from Steve Schwartz' Facebook page about the termination of his show after nearly 27 years: "You've heard by now: My almost 27 year run on WGBH radio is coming to an end as of September 1st. I will no long be on the radio doing a jazz show. It is a gigantic blow, not only to me but to the jazz community at large. Not only here in Boston but all around the country and the world. We have listeners on line everywhere. It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of this community and I hope still be able to contribute to it in other ways. You can let WGBH Management know how you feel by writing to:phil_redo@wgbh.orgThanks for your support and keep swinging!

Also on June 20, on Eric Jackson's Facebook page we read: "Changes at WGBH are coming. My evening show is going to be eliminated. I will be on the air Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 PM until Midnight. Steve Schwartz will be let go and my position will be scaled back to part time. I am not sure if there will be any change to Bob Parlocha's show."

In 2009-2010 many of us attended community advisory committee meetings, sent letters to senior executives and the board of directors and withdrew support via volunteering and memberships. All to no avail. WGBH management's answer then was, on the advice of "industry experts" there was room in the Boston market for an all-news/talk public radio outlet (the other being WBUR) so it was going "single format" (all news and talk). It appears today WGBH management, with the support of the board of directors and the members who elect them, are holding steady by reducing jazz broadcast hours.

What's next, the complete elimination of jazz and reduction/elimination of "A Celtic Sojourn?" That would be the logical course in keeping with the "single stream" business approach. We chose to use the word "business" as WGBH has become an operation run as a for-profit business, not a not-for-profit rooted in serving the public. Remember the public, it's the operative word of "public radio."

When WGBH management pulled the plug on folk and blues programs, Jim Kweskin provided the following quote:
"I can only assume this has something to do with the almighty dollar. Isn't this supposed to be public radio and aren't we the public. Folk music has been a mainstay on WGBH for as long as I can remember. Acoustic artists are as popular as ever and in some ways even more popular then in days gone by. I don't get it. WGBH should be ashamed of itself. Well, as Ma Joad said, "We're the people and you can't stop us and you can't lick us. We just keep coming, 'cause we're the people."
That was true on November 11, 2009 and, unfortunately, remains true today.

On July 5, Ken Fields organized a "Jazz Funeral for Jazz on WGBH" - https://www.facebook.com/events/421033477939879/ - which, due to short notice and Independence Day, may not attract as many people as otherwise would wish to attend. So we're organizing another funeral, this time involving members of the folk and blues community, who did not give their programs an appropriate farewell.

Spread the word, invite your friends!

Musicians should arrive by 5:45pm. Music scores for "Just a Closer Walk with Thee", "Peace" (Eric Jackson's theme song) and "Rock of Ages" are available herePrint (extra) copies and bring to the funeral. Kudos to Ken Field for providing.

UMass Boston Radio Station Extends its Transmitter Network to New Hampshire

Let's get this straight. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is funding legal costs (FCC license filing) infrastructure improvements and ongoing maintenance (the transmitter) in order to broadcast AAA pop music produced by a professional staff of Massachusetts employees originating from studios owned by the state located at UMass Boston that will be heard only by residents of New Hampshire?

From Towards Independent College / Community Radio WUMB, published  Sunday, July 15, 2012 at 9:26am

The WUMB Empire Strikes New Hampshire

Unsupported by the informaiton in its "RECEPTION"* area (which omits the Stow (added 2011) and Marshfield transmitters (added 2012), as well as leased WPNI faciltiy), the WUMB empire has expanded to a state far, far away, New Hampshire.

Announced by Naomi Arenberg ("Fill-In Announcer, currently on Sunday morning's Acoustic Sunrise" - http://wumb.org/programs/announcers.php?AnnouncerID=16), the expansion is unsupported by neither a home page "WUMB HAPPENINGS" announcement nor mention in its blog - http://wumbradio.blogspot.com/ (last entry, "Remembering Doc", May 30, 2012), not even a mention in its official Facebook page, WUMB Radio Network - https://www.facebook.com/pages/WUMB-Radio-Network/23985746031,
WUMB is now broadcasting from Milford, New Hampshire.

From information available in http://radio-locator.com, WUMB's transmitter newtork now consists of:
91.9fm WUMB (600 watts, Dorchester)
91.9fm WBPR (370 watts, Worcester)91.9fm, WFPB (6000 watts, Falmouth)
91.7fm WNEF (1000 watts, Newburyport)
91.7fm WUMG (660 watts, Stow)
91.7fm WUMT (1000 watts, Maarshfield)
88.7fm WUMV ( 670 watts, Milford, NH)1170am, WFPB (6000 watts, Falmouth)
1430am WPNI (5000 watts daytime, 11 watts nighttime, Amherst; it is not clear if WUMB's leasing/use of this station continues, two years ago it was to have been a short-term arrangement)

But according to the WUMB "signal coverage map" the radio network is currently comprised of five radio transmitters

  • WUMB heard on 91.9 fm in greater Boston
  • WBPR heard on 91.9 fm in greater Worcester
  • WFPB heard on 91.9 fm in greater Falmouth, Martha's Vindyard, Nantucket, Southeastern MA, and Eastern RI
  • WNEF heard on 91.7 fm in greater Newburyport
  • WFPB AM heard on 1170 AM in greater Orleans and Nantucket

??????????

The growth and secrecy growth begs answers:
1. If WUMB is so proud of its out-of-state expansion, why are the Stow, Marshfield, Ahmerst and now New Hampshire transmitters not being shared with the public via its blog and website?
2. Why is the license holder, the University of Massachusetts, allowing brining on line a new OUT OF STATE transmitter? Are there no better uses of taxpayer funds for the Boston campus, Massachusetts residents are better served by providing New Hampshire citizens free radio?
3. Milford, New Hampshire is 60 miles from UMass Boston, but only 24 miles from UMass Lowell. If Massachusetts had some logical reason to be providing free radio service to another state, wouldn't it be logical that the coverage area of the closest UMass radio station, WUML, be selected?
4. How much did this boondoggle cost - what are the associated costs (license application and transfer fees, legal fees, site acquisition, site work, upgrade, maintenance, etc.)?
5. What is the reason for a "network" beyond the Dorchester campus? Are transmitters on Cape Cod, Newburyport, Metro West, Worcester, South Shore and now out of state needed to service the UMass Boston students when they are away from campus?
6. Why have the fiscal conservatives not been vocal in opposition to this ever-expanding network, first with in-state transmitters and now out-of-state?

Folk, Blues, Classical and Jazz Funeral for Passed WGBH Music Programs, Copley Plaza, 7/27

Hundreds of jazz musicians and fans turned out at the "public" radio WGBH studios in Brighton this past Thursday to hold a funeral for the reduction of WGBH jazz programming.

A second funeral, not limited to just the passing of jazz, is planned for Friday, July 27, starting at 6pm, in Copley Plaza. Fans of all passed and endangered music forms (folk and blues were killed in 2009, classical was shuffled off to an inferior carrier in 2010, and there is no guarantee from WGBH management that Celtic, the only remaining form, will not be next) are expected.  The second funeral will be held in conjunction with the Boston Summer Arts Weekend, which is sponsored in part by WGBH. A bit of irony is that with Steve Schwartz terminated after 27 years of service and Eric Jackson's (30 years) program reduced and moved from weeknights to weekends, some WGBH blueblood will have to emcee the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as there are no remaining jazz staff available.

Musicians Protest Jazz Cuts at WGBH Radio

Hundreds attended the funeral held Thursday, July 5 outside the studios of "public" radio station WGBH in Brighton, organized by community/independent college WMBR producer/host Ken Field. The jazz funeral was held in conjunction with Eric Jackson's final weekday evening program (after 30 years, Ken's weeknight program is being eliminated, his hours reduced to those formerly filled by Steve Schwartz, who, after 27 years, has been fired).

From Ken: "WGBH Radio's management has recently demolished its jazz programming by firing Steve Schwartz and relegating Eric Jackson to weekends. Join others in saying goodbye to decades of weeknight jazz programming on WGBH by participating as a musician or listener in a short New Orleans style jazz funeral outside WGBH studios (http://www.wgbh.org/about/Directions.cfm) on the final evening of Eric Jackson's weeknight program."

PETER ROWAN BIOGRAPHY
Grammy-award winner and six-time Grammy nominee, Peter Rowan is a bluegrass singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of bluegrass patriarch Bill Monroe, and following his stint in Old & In the Way with Jerry Garcia and subsequent breakout as both a solo performer and bandleader, Rowan has built a devoted, international fan base through his continuous stream of original recordings, collaborative projects, and constant touring.
Born in Wayland, Massachusetts to a musical family, Rowan first learned to play guitar from his uncle. He spent his teenage years absorbing the sights and sounds of the Boston music scene, playing bluegrass at the Hillbilly Ranch and discovering folk and blross the Charles River at the legendary Club 47 on Mt. Auburn Street in Cambridge. "I could sit in with the Lilly Brothers at the Hillbilly Ranch and then catch the MTA and be in time for Joan Baez's last set at the Club 47. Bluegrass appealed to me. ues ac It was callin' me—the harmonies, that high and lonesome calling-sound. Don Stover had played banjo with Bill Monroe, fiddler Tex Logan too, before they joined the Lillys. Mandolinist Joe Val taught me all the Blue Sky Boys and the Louvin Brothers songs. I would play a 'sock-hop' with my rockin' group, The Cupids, and then make a beeline for the clubs. Sonny Terry and Brownie Magee, Josh White, Muddy Waters- they all came to town!"
Following three years in college, Rowan left academia to pursue a life in music. Rowan began his professional career in 1964 as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys, living in Nashville and playing with Monroe on the Grand Ol' Opry every week. "One thing I liked about the Monroe style was that there was a lot more blues in it than other styles of bluegrass," reflects Rowan. "It was darker. It had more of an edge to it. And yet it still had the ballad tradition in it, and I loved that." Rowan stayed with Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, touring constantly both in the United States and in England, for two and a half years." We went from old-timey places way down south to the colleges up north, we played to all ages, long-time fans of Bluegrass and the college kids my own age."
The late '60s and early 70's saw Rowan collaborating with musical compatriots in a number of rock, folk and bluegrass combinations: Earth Opera with David Grisman, Sea Train with fiddler Richard Greene (himself a graduate of Monroe's band) Muleskinner with both Grisman and Greene, former Bluegrass Boy banjoist Bill Keith and the great Clarence White. From the ashes of Muleskinner, Rowan and Grisman went on to join Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn, forming the legendary bluegrass band Old & In the Way. It was during this time that Rowan penned the song "Panama Red," a subsequent hit for the New Riders of the Purple Sage and a classic ever since. Other time-honored compositions by Rowan include " Moonlight Midnight", " In The Land of the Navajo" and "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy”. Jerry Garcia himself recorded Rowan's "Moonlight Midnight" and the haunting "Mississippi Moon". The 1970’s also saw Peter Rowan playing and recording alongside brothers Chris and Lorin Rowan as the The Rowan Brothers. Their three albums for Elektra-Asylum featured original songs highlighted by the three siblings soaring harmonies.
Rowan subsequently embarked on a well-received solo career in 1978, releasing such critically acclaimed records as Dustbowl Children (a Woody Guthrie style song cycle about humanity's spirituality in relationship to the earth), Yonder (a record of old-time country songs and Rowan originals in collaboration with ace dobro player, Jerry Douglas) and two extraordinarily fine bluegrass albums, The First Whippoorwill and Bluegrass Boy, as well as High Lonesome Cowboy, a recording of traditional old-time cowboy songs with Don Edwards and guitarist Norman Blake. Rowan's recent releases- Reggaebilly, a wonderful blend of reggae and bluegrass and Quartet, a recording with the phenomenal Tony Rice, coupled with a relentless touring schedule have further endeared Peter Rowan to audiences around the world.
On the road, Rowan performs internationally as a solo singer-songwriter, while stateside he plays in three bands: the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, a quartet featuring Jody Stecher, Keith Little, and Paul Knight; The Peter Rowan & Tony Rice Quartet; and his rocking band, The Free Mexican Air Force.

Jazz Funeral for Jazz on WGBH Radio, 7/5, Brighton

Thursday, July 5, 2012, 8pm
One Guest Street, Brighton, MA

For background information, read WGBH's March Towards "Single Format" Continues

Community radio producer/host Ken Field is organizing a "jazz funeral" in protest of Boston NPR affiliate WGBH's decision to drastically cut its jazz programming (terminating Steve Schwartz's show and relegating Eric's to the weekend) with a "Jazz Funeral" outside WGBH studios. Members of the music community have been invited to attend to express displeasure with this misguided decision.

Ken writes: "WGBH Radio's management has recently demolished its jazz programming by firing Steve Schwartz and relegating Eric Jackson to weekends. Join others in saying goodbye to decades of weeknight jazz programming on WGBH by participating as a musician or listener in a short New Orleans style jazz funeral outside WGBH studios on the final evening of Eric Jackson's weeknight program."

Social media is being used to spread the word. Ken has created a Facebook event titled "Jazz Funeral for Jazz on WGBH Radio"
WGBH Radio's management has recently demolished its jazz programming by firing Steve Schwartz and relegating Eric Jackson to weekends. Musicians: Please arrive by 7:45pm. We will start with Just a Closer Walk in Bb done as a slow processional, followed by an uptempo 2nd line section, followed by an uptempo Down By the Riverside in Bb. I'll post some charts here.
Three Facebook groups are being used to facilitate communication about WGBH's continuing march towards "single-format" (all news/talk) radio:

SAVE ERIC IN THE EVENING
(recently created and managed by Robb Willison)

WGBH is considering cancelling Eric's decades-old weekday evening programming, as well as Jazz with Steve Schwartz. We think this would do a disservice to listeners and the greater Boston community and we'd like WGBH to reconsider.

"Supporters of Folk and Blues on WGBH" is dedicated to the few hearty souls who fought WGBH's blue-blood stuffed shirts and lost the battle, but not the war."I can only assume this has something to do with the almighty dollar. We just keep coming, 'cause we're the people."-Jim Kweskin, November 11, 2009.
"Leslie Warshaw, a WGBH producer for over 30 years and now retired, noted that the station constantly spoke in her day of “mission.” Gradually it changed from “mission” to “service” and then, she noted wistfully, became “business.”"
We are the dedicated listeners and supporters of "Folk on WGBH" and "Blues on WGBH", deemed "nonnews elements" that do not fit the new "single format" (news/talk). Both programs were canceled 12/1/09.
WGBH's words from the past ring hollow today. "WGBH enriches people's lives through programs and services that educate, inspire, and entertain, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning, and the power of diverse perspectives." ~ WGBH website
"We are proud of the folk and blues programs we have offered and of the many contributions that WGBH and our hosts have made to these genres, so it was a difficult decision to discontinue Blues on WGBH and Folk on WGBH..." ~ press release announcing program cancellation.
To read additional background information, the official WGBH statement and host/producer information, go to http://notlobmusic.blogspot.com/2009/11/wgbh-drops-folk-and-blues-programs.html...

Between the three events some 4000 individuals have been invited the funeral. Some 2000+ more could be if and when "Save Jazz on WGBH Now!" creates its.

One person who will not be in attendance is fired 27-year veteran jazz producer/host Steve Schwartz. So his presence does not interfere with his last show the following evening, WGBH management has "counseled" him that attending would "not be cool."

Whether the jazz funeral will convince WGBH management to alter its decision remains to be scene, but what is certain is Brighton is in store for a large scale jazz funeral.

It's a Heptunes July

As pointed out in July Folk Festivals and Music/Dance Camps from the NEFolk Database, July certainly is a month for festivals in New England. But that does not mean there are no great indoor concerts to attend. So wash off the festival mud, get the dust out of your lungs and attend one of these fine productions by Heptunes Concerts!

Hot Tuna will be supported by Darol Anger and Emy Phelps (I'm thinking the inevitable joint performance when Jorma invites Darol on stage will sound like the good old days with Papa John Creech).

RT will be solo, imho the way he sounds and performs best!

From their days playing together as teenagers to their current acoustic and electric blues, probably no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the founders and continuing core members of Hot Tuna. The Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers originally formed Hot Tuna as a side project from their duties in The Jefferson Airplane, the legendary ground-breaking San Francisico band The project has continued its evolution for over five decades. They recently released their first studio album in 20 years. We proudly welcome them back to the New England coast.

World class fiddler, Darol Anger, was an original member of The David Grisman Quintet and went on to found Psychograss, The Republic Of Strings, and other cutting edge bluegrass groups. His partner, Emy Phelps, is a Boston-based singer/songwriter originally frorn the Pacific Northwest. A few years ago, they both liked what they saw in the Portland music scene so much, they moved to town. We have asked them to return for this special show.

Ticket Information: All seats are General Admission. Please note, we request that all online orders be picked up one half hour before showtime.

The Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) returns to Newburyport just in time to celebrate the June 20 release of an 80 track 3 CD, DVD set of his BBC recordings.

Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of all-time and the recent recipient of both an Ivor Novello Award for Songwriting and the 2006 BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, the iconic British folk rock legend is one of the world's most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. His work is admired and recorded by such artists as Bonnie Raitt, David Byrne and Elvis Costello. From his teenage years as a founding member of the 1960's pioneering group Fairport Convention to duo work with his then-wife, Linda Thompson, and over 20 years as a solo artist, to scoring Werner Hertzog's 2005 documentary 'Grizzly Man', Richard Thompson's astounding body of work includes over 40 albums of lyrical wit anchored by such a singular acoustic and electric guitar delivery that Newsweek recently announced, 'like all genuine art, it satisfies completely.'
