The 2018 Line-up
Anna & Elizabeth, Cedric Watson, Hubby Jenkins, Mike Bub in the Lineup for Oldtone This Year

Hillsdale, NY, April 11, 2018 The Oldtone Roots Music Festival 2018, September 6-9, 2018
Cool Whisper Farm, 1011 County Rt 21, North Hillsdale, NY, 12529.

Oldtone Productions continue their  carefully curated old-time music line up with the return of some Oldtone favorites and some exciting new folks. Roots music fans will be delighted to hear that the Appalachian Mountain duo Anna & Elizabeth (recently featured in the New Yorker) will be bringing their harmonies and their art to the Hillsdale festival. Also new this year are Oldtime Blues artist Hubby Jenkins (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Creole artist and former member of The Pine Leaf Boys Cedric Watson, well known upright bass player Mike Bub (Del McCoury band). Other new artists include Five Mile Mountain Road (bluegrass), cajun fiddlers Joel Savoy and Kelli Jones, roots trio Pete’s Posse, and the Balkan Romani Gypsy duo Eva Salina and Peter Stan.

The returning lineup makes up Oldtone’s core, with some of the most exciting roots artists today. The Oldtone host band, is the well-known Foghorn String Band from Portland, OR, Oldtone’s favorite Cajun band Jesse Lege and the Bayou Brew will be returning to the Main and Dance Stages, as will the old time darlings Bill and the Belles. Bill and the Belles are the house band for Farm & Fun Time which is hosted by Radio Bristol producer and house band-leader Kris Truelsen, (the show is hot in the Roots music world right now). The Down Hill Strugglers are also making waves, and band member Jackson Lynch recently played the Half Moon with his band Jackson and the Janks, the Hudson hot spot that Oldtone partners with for their SuperTone promotional shows. Nora Brown, the young up and coming roots banjo player captured the festival’s hearts and minds last year with her appearance on the “tweener” stage and has a place on the Main Stage for 2018.

Oldtone organizer Kip Beacco stated; “I can’t begin to tell you about all the amazing artists we’ve got coming this, year, it’s breathtaking.”

“Oldtone is the good ol’ days. I have never had such fun playing music as I did in the dancing tent in the Oldtone Country Revue - the smell of sawdust from the freshly built stage, the twinkling lights, and the warm summer air on our skin as dancers twirled and two-stepped by. Oldtone is a dream.” stated singer Lauren Ambrose.

notloB Recommends... "NONE BUT THE BEST"

"NONE BUT THE BEST"
the latest production by IN GOOD COMPANY.

This musical play tells the remarkable story of a 19th century Boston Publisher and philanthropist, Daniel Sharp Ford, whose weekly periodical had the largest circulation of any periodical in the country at that time.  Unlike his contemporary business titans of the Gilded Age, he didn't build mansions in Newport.  Instead, he used his wealth to feed and clothe the poor, and to provide vocational training to enable them to support themselves during the tumultuous period between the Civil War and the end of the 19th century.

There are two performances
Saturday, May 5th at 7:30pm
and
Sunday, May 6th at 4pm First Parish in Waltham 50 Church St, Waltham, MA 02452

"Their music comes from wild landscapes and wild places of the spirit." -- The Orcadian

The name is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Originally formed as a quartet, Cantrip sprung from a local session in Edinburgh nearly twenty years ago. Their driving music immediately caught the attention of the masses, and they were quickly signed to the Foot Stompin' label. With their first album "Silver" (2001) in hand, Cantrip made its way across the water to the United States, where they were received with roars and shouts (of enjoyment). After years of significant touring, the band parted ways with Foot Stompin' and began producing albums on their own. Two albums later ("Boneshaker" in 2005 and "Piping the Fish" in 2008), Cantrip had cemented itself as a perennial figure. After a period of hiatus in which children were born and continents were left for new ones, Cantrip redefined its sound. Trimming itself to a trio, the band tightened its arrangements while expanding its influence. New inspirations began creeping into the sound, complementing the traditional foundation of the band. This more mature sound debuted on their recent release "The Crossing" (2016) and has been catching the ear of listeners and concert goers all over again. Now, in recognition of 20 years of performing the band is returning to its roots and revisiting Silver, with a live re-release slated for Autumn 2018 that looks to be as exciting and full of energy as ever.

DAN HOUGHTON (bagpipes, flute, whistles, guitar, bouzouki, vocals)

Dan was born in Ghana, but was transported to Scotland shortly thereafter, where he was surrounded by the indigenous music. He began his career with the whistle at age seven and started playing bagpipes in the early nineties, proceeding to win the Scottish Lowland and Border Pipers' Society Open Borderpipes and New Composition events (multiple times), as well as the Maitre de Cornemuse at St. Chartier. Over the years he increased his versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, becoming an accomplished player on the flute, bouzouki and DADGAD guitar. In 2010, with the help of many friends (including Jon Bews), Dan released his first solo recording entitled "The Long March Home". He is an instructor at the Vermont Institute of Celtic Arts, and in addition to Cantrip can be heard as a member of Parcel of Rogues, Prydien and Salsa Celtica. Outside of music Dan holds a BSc Hons I degree in Applied Mathematics and Geophysics from the University of Otago and an MLitt degree in Gaelic Literature and Language from the University of Edinburgh.

JON BEWS (fiddle, vocals)

A veteran of the fiddle, having started at age four, Jon came to Scots music from a classical education by way of Goth rock. But it didn't take long for him to entrench himself in the world and carve a name for himself as a fiddler. A prizewinning graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 1994, he has performed and recorded with such diverse artists as Malinky, James Yorkston, Mikel Urdangarin, Ranarim, Deaf Mutes and Samling. In addition to Cantrip, he currently plays with Edinburgh based bands Urvanovic, OBT and League of Regrettable Superheroes. Jon is also widely recognised as a composer and arranger. His string arrangements have been sought out by Ewan MacPherson and Fribo and his tunes have won high acclaim across the board. Jon moved to the Scottish Borders in 2003 where he spent two years as Traditional and World Music Development Worker for Scottish Borders Council. He stayed there because the view is nice and only moved back to Edinburgh because the shops are open later.
ERIC MCDONALD (guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, vocals)

As a US native, Eric found his way to traditional music through the rich local music scene in his hometown Boston. Nearly a decade after studying at Berklee College of Music under world renowned musicians such as guitarist/mandolinist John McGann and cellist Eugene Friesene, he is now established as one of the USA's premier accompanists in many styles. Eric cut his teeth playing for contra dances in New England, and can still often be seen from the dance floor. Nowadays he is an active session player, regularly recording and traveling with musicians of many stripes. Touring credits include The Outside Track, Chris Norman Ensemble, Andrea Beaton, Wendy MacIsaac and Katie McNally. In addition to Cantrip, he can currently be seen touring with traditional Irish music trio Daymark, Scottish fiddle champion Ryan McKasson and award winning singer/songwriter Connor Garvey. In addition to guitar accompaniment, Eric's debut solo album "Rove" features his unique style and approach to tunes on the mandolin, as well as carefully crafted deliveries of traditional ballads on voice and guitar.

SAILBOW
Sailbow is a contemporary Celtic fiddle and cello duo featuring Emilie Rose and Casey Murray.
The two met at Berklee College of Music in the American Roots Music Program. They compose and arrange original fiddle tunes and enjoy combining their musical individuality to bring a fresh perspective on traditional folk music.
Both Casey and Emilie were heavily influenced by their respective musical communities on different sides of the country. Casey comes from Rochester, NY where New England Contra dancing and Contra music sparked her interest and the flame kept growing. Emilie grew up through various fiddle camps in her community in Northern California and flourished with guidance and inspiration from instructors. In combining their unique experiences that they hold very close to their hearts, Emilie and Casey are able to channel their emotional and musical sensitivity into energetic, heartfelt music.

JORDAN & JORDAN
Minnie and Ella Jordan have been playing music together for more than a decade—starting on violin, over the years they have added vocals, guitar and tenor guitar to their repertoire. They are fluent in the Jazz, Swing, Western Swing, Country, Bluegrass and Classical idioms. They have been performing publicly for many years, and play upwards of 50 gigs a year. Both are currently studying at Berklee College of Music on scholarship. Scholarships have enabled them to study eclectic string styles at numerous camps, including the Randy Elmore Fiddle Camp, Christian Howes’ Creative Strings Workshop, Dave Alexander’s Big Texas Swing Camp, Berklee Global String Intensive, and the Berklee Roots Weekend. They have been able to study privately with legendary fiddle players Billy Contreras, Mike Barnett, and Buddy Spicher, and with jazz violin master Christian Howes. They were the winners of the 2010 Old Settlers Music Festival Youth competition, and have been featured performers on SUN and KOOP radio in Austin. They were especially honored to have been the 2014 recipients of the Daniel Pearl Memorial violins. They have appeared in print in Texas Monthly, Huffington Post, the Austin Chronicle, and most recently, on the cover of Texas Polka News!

ETHAN SETIAWAN is a Boston-based mandolin player who’s won such accolades as the National Mandolin Championship, the RockyGrass Mandolin Championship, and a full-ride scholarship to Berklee College of Music. An involved member of the Boston alt-bluegrass scene, his path has wended its way through traditional bluegrass, to Bach partitas, to free jazz, and his debut full-length album is made up of original tunes drawing from all these wells. The album was conceived and crafted as a whole; the tunes were written for the band, who were chosen for the tunes. To write the album, he dove deep into the compositional techniques and tunes of some of the pioneers of the current wave of bluegrass: Bela Fleck, Matt Flinner, David Grisman and Mike Marshall, to name a few. After months of writing, discarding, and editing, a body of tunes emerged as clear candidates for a record. Over several years, the community around Ethan in the Northeast and Midwest evolved into the perfect band for a project such as this. The band features Julian Pinelli and Avery Merritt on fiddles, Sam Leslie on guitar, and Jacob Warren playing bass. Skilled engineer and mandolinist Dan Bui of Twisted Pine engineered and mixed the album. The recording process took place at the Record Company in Boston, and the resulting album contains close friends and bandmates, a batch of carefully crafted tunes, and the freshest grooves in bluegrass. He has shared the stage with Julian Lage, Darrell Scott, Bryan Sutton, Mike Marshall, Tony Trischka, Darol Anger, Casey Driessen, the Steel Wheels, Don Stiernberg, Matt Flinner, and Jacob Jolliff, and has performed at venues such as Savannah Music Festival, IBMA’s Wide Open Bluegrass Streetfest, Prairie Home Companion, the Walnut Valley Festival, the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Freshgrass, the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, the Red Wing Roots Music Festival, and Club Passim. He’s a member of bands Theory Expats, The Leafless, Corner House, The Harmolodic String Band, and OctoPladd (notloB Music concert #182, 3/23/16).

MINNIE JORDAN is a talented cross-genre violinist currently splitting her time between Massachusetts and Texas. Although violin is her primary instrument, she is also a skilled vocalist, mandolinist, and tenor guitar player.

Growing up on a ranch in rural Texas, Minnie was immersed in the sounds of Western Swing and Texas fiddle. She began playing publically at age 9 in a duo with her younger sister, Ella. The two busked and played Texas Oprys, honing their chops and ultimately winning the youth talent competition at the renowned Old Settlers Music Festival, where they showcased in 2011. In 2014 Minnie was awarded use of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin, made by Jonathan Cooper, and awarded at the Mark O’Connor String Conference.

Minnie continues to perform at festivals and other venues in both the Boston area and central Texas. She has also worked as a session musician, and recorded the theme song for the NYC Employees Deferred Compensation ad series. She has performed on festival stages at FreshGrass, MEOWcon, and the Texas Music Jamboree.

Minnie has actively sought to expand her musical horizons by studying with some of music’s most gifted contemporary teachers and players, including Billy Contreras, Christian Howes, John Patitucci, Danilo Perez, and Buddy Spicher, among others. Her efforts led to her accepting a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music. While there, she was admitted into the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, where she receives instruction from preeminent players in the genre as well as participating in community outreach efforts.

In addition to being a talented musician, Minnie has won awards for her visual and textile art and academic achievement.
