2011 (Mostly) Northeast Folk/Roots/Old-time/Bluegrass/Cajun/Celtic Festivals

The frost will soon be on the pumpkins, it's time to look ahead to the 2011 Folk/Roots/Old-time/Bluegrass/Cajun/Celtic music festivals presented in the northeastern USA and maritime Canada.  And once again the members of NEFolknRoots will be doing their part to keep accurate information available in one database.  This is a collective effort, your input is welcome.

From their websites or official communications, we have some information about a dozen or so festivals.  For those festivals the start and end dates are in the first two columns.  But for dozens more (with "??" in their date fields) we need that and much more.  If you have missing and needed information, or if you notice incorrect information, please send an email to NorthEastFolknRoots-owner@yahoogroups.com

As more information becomes available the database will be edited and messages corresponding to the number in that column will be posted to the group.

Bloggers and anyone else wishing to share:  notloB Music Blog and NEFolknRoots freely shares this information, but we would appreciate your citing the source.

Happy Birthday, Rounder!

Ken Irwin (left), Marian Leighton Levy, and Bill Nowlin

Tomorrow, October 22 will be 40 years since the release of the first two Rounder Records albums, Rounder 0001 George Pegram and Rounder 0002, The Spark Gap Wonder Boys.  It wasn't until 1971 that we released our first bluegrass album, 0003 Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys' "One Morning in May."

It really DOESN'T seem like "only yesterday", but it doesn't seem nearly that long ago. Bill and Marian and I all pretty much expected we'd be teachers some day, and - in a sense - we have been involved in teaching of sorts, helping to try to get attention for a wide variety of minority-taste music (but pleased to see several of our "roots music" artists succeeding on larger stages as the years have passed.) At the same time, we've been long time students, learning from everyone we could.  We've become part of a great community which includes incredible artists, fans, managers, agents, talent buyers, media people and so many more.

It's been almost exactly six months since we joined the Concord Music Group, and it's been a very good experience. There's always some trepidation regarding the unknown but Concord's reputation preceded it and we really have found the people at Concord to be good allies as we confront these rapidly-changing times.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you and the greater bluegrass community for your support of bluegrass and other roots musics over the years.

Year 41 starts on Saturday.

Thanks,

The Rounders

notloB Folk Concerts presents this special homecoming concert at the end of the band's fall 2010 tour. This is the Boston debut of this program.

The Guy Mendilow Band performs centuries-old music from Jewish communities from places such as Smyrna, Salonica, Jerusalem and Sarajevo, sung in the Judeo-Spanish Ladino. Stories of sailors seduced by sirens at sea, murder, intrigue, fantastic dreams and the treachery of kings and qu...eens abound in these colourful canticas. Led by Israeli performer Guy Mendilow, the group makes this ancient music relevant to modern audiences by recasting it through the multicultural lens drawn from the places Mendilow and his musicians have called home, from Israel and Brazil to the United States. The result is a dynamic blend of Sephardi tempered with Brazilian street beats and blues in vibrant musical storytelling awash with warm vocal harmonies, intricate textures and spellbinding rhythms.

“This isn’t for quirky ears, it’s for jaded ears that need to be shaken awake with something substantially different that keeps the interest on the beam throughout. Delightfully different, even when it seems like it might be familiar. ” —Midwest Record

Fairy Tales Can Come True

Reposted with permission.

Fairy Tales Can Come True

This post from Radio-Info.com should give pause — but it won’t — to those rabid musical directors at our “public” radio stations chasing after the fabled youth market with their programming of Triple-A tripe. In it, we learn of “The American Youth Study; Radio’s Future II,” a look along with Edison Research at where the kids really are going, not where the mindless mass of suits thinks they’re going. Among the findings of the study, which looks at “the 12-24 listeners as well as the 22-34 year olds (following up on the same group from the 2000 study)” is this astounding fact: “[T]ime spent with over-the-air radio is down from 2 hours and 43 minutes (reported in Edison’s year-2000 study) to 1 hour and 24 minutes.” A second significant finding: “[A] majority of listeners want a personality along with the music.”
Jeez, kinda makes you wonder what’s going to happen to all the glorious plans of those feckless leaders who sought to woo the young’uns while simultaneously throwing the fogeys under the bus. (Recall, if you will, that the average age of the listener to public radio is 54, with 90% of them over 35.) Yet the bean counters slaver over the latest listings from the Purple People Meter of Arbitron, laying out the big bucks to be tallied alongside their commercial counterparts worshipping at the totem of Triple A.
Additional information is posted here at the Edison website, including this gem: “Alternative Rock stations were selected by half as many listeners in 2010 as in 2000.”
Once upon a time, in a land far away, public radio was concerned with airing music not heard on a thousand other stations. KUT GM Stewart Vanderwilt once piously pronounced:
KUT is . . . a community for music lovers. From adult rock to folk, from blues to world music, KUT seeks out music that isn’t promoted, packaged, or hyped. Music you wouldn’t find without us. . . . KUT is a community of people like you — principled and independent, curious and intelligent. People who cherish their rights as individuals to think, speak and act for themselves. Citizens who get involved when they know that they can make a difference.
That went away when the grand visions of empire building — which included a tripling of the budget to countenance multiple HD channels, the “best and the brightest” high-dollar executives in the radio world to supplant the old guard, a new building, a massive local news presence (not to mention a PR campaign to convince the public they knew what they were doing) — put a crimp in the old budget. Time to get a new plan, and that meant scrabbling in the dirt with all the commercial vagabonds faced with hard times in the Magic Land of Radio.

From southeast Africa, Tony Bird, a Malawi-born song man, is a complete original. With a mesmerizing intensity, his voice, vision, guitar style and persona are unique in all of folk music. Bird's African roots have produced a performer with a far-ranging repertoire that includes exotic travelogues from mountains with misty landscapes to desert and bushland filled with lions, birds, bushmen, mangoes, monkeys, sunsets and bicycles.... All this savannah-laden tropicana is interspersed with narrative tales of darkness and delight, topical and historical commentary, love songs, musical tone poems, rallying cries of inspiration and a whimsical sense of humor.

Bird's rich geographic and cultural background has spawned a music of diverse influences. Drawing from the southern African mbqanga and kwela rhythms, Afrikaans boeremusiek and even calypso, along with western traditions of folk, blues, country and rock, his music is an original amalgamation of all these styles, which he loosely describes as "African Folk-Rock." He creates the sound of a full band with his unique slapping, percussive guitar picking, a clicking mouth and an energetic stomping left foot. With a raw organic quality, his grainy voice breaks into growls, whispers and falsettos contrasted against sophisticated painterly lyrics.
Formerly exposed to the impact of modernity on the African landscape, Bird has an inherent indigenous and environmental thread running through his music. Not surprisingly, he has performed at various nature conservancies, including the Rachel Carson Institute where he was presented with an award. While some of his songs take audiences on exotic safaris into the African bushland, others are deep, humanistic journeys of the soul.

Bird had two early vinyl albums released on Columbia in the '70s, "Tony Bird" and "Tony Bird of Paradise." The latter garnered acclaim in a 1986 People Magazine critics' poll as one of the top 10 albums of all time. "Sorry Africa," his 1990 Philo/Rounder release, features fellow southern African musicians who have supported a line of African roots stars from Hugh Masekela to Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte, as well as Paul Simon's South African-influenced "Graceland." Bird's release pre-dated Simon's by at least a decade.

Returning in 2003 after a six year hiatus due to hand problems, Bird will be releasing another CD which will feature the same wonderful musicians, including one song with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who became enamored of Tony's music when he toured with them in the '80s. In the early '90s, he also toured with South African stars, the late Simon Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens.

Growing up in the era of colonialism and Apartheid, Bird developed a sharp, conscious universal eye. That same urgency and relevance permeates the expanse of his new music, which now reflects his American experience as well as his worldly African roots.

Tony Bird has been called "The Father of African Folk-Rock." Yet, he is even more. He's an inventive, passionate, theatrical performer who delivers the deeply moving and searching anthems of a mature poet. Some of these songs are extended odes to life that seem to draw from the wisdom of another time and place. It's not unusual for even small club audiences to respond with standing ovations to his altruistic, involving and engaging concerts. This rare bird of eloquent song will fly into your soul and the extraordinary experience of a Tony Bird concert is not to be missed.

By skillfully complementing their deep roots in traditional American music with new ideas, songs, and arrangements, the “all g’Earl” stringband Uncle Earl has emerged as one of the leading lights in the ongoing old-time renaissance. Now entering the band’s tenth year, longtime Uncle Earl members KC Groves and Kristin Andreassen are leading a new formation of the band that has influenced a remarkable new generation of old-time musicians. This year Uncle Earl will feature some of the most accomplished and engaging musicians in the American stringband scene, including fiddler Stephanie Coleman, banjo players Paula Bradley, Cassandra Jenkins & Rachel Eddy, and Uncle Earl alum Bryn "Bass Lady" Davies.

Founded in 1999 by vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist KC Groves (mandolin, guitar, bass), Uncle Earl’s lineup evolved as the band’s musical boundaries expanded. Kristin Andreassen joined in 2003, contributing her perceptive original songs in addition to vocals, rhythm guitar, fiddle, ukulele, and clog dancing. Two self-released EPs lead to a contract with venerable folk label Rounder Records, for whom they recorded She Waits For Night with producer Dirk Powell and Waterloo, Tennessee, produced by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, who called the album “definitely one of the most enjoyable productions that I have ever been involved with.” Their albums, combined with the group’s infectious live shows, garnered rave reviews from such influential media outlets as the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Mojo, No Depression, The New Yorker, and Relix. Waterloo, Tenessee was named Folk Alliance Album of the Year in 2007.

Able to draw from a vast range of experiences, talents, and perspectives, the newest edition of Uncle Earl is versatile and powerful. Andreassen says "Everyone who plays with Uncle Earl has an exciting career in music outside the band as well. We come together to play because it's fun to keep this connection with friends and with the traditional music that's inspired us."

In the fall of 2009, Uncle Earl was selected by the prestigious Columbia Artist Management Inc. agency as the headlining band for their month-long American Revival tour. In 2010, the g'Earls toured Australia (March), Germany (May), and will make some limited summer festival appearances in the United States.

David Rovics grew up in a family of classical musicians in Wilton, Connecticut, and became a fan of populist regimes early on. By the early 90's he was a full-time busker in the Boston subways and by the mid-90's he was traveling the world as a professional flat-picking rabble-rouser. These days David lives with his family in Portland, Oregon and tours regularly on four continents, playing for audiences large and small at cafes,... pubs, universities, churches, union halls and protest rallies.

David has shared the stage with a veritable of who's who of the left in two dozen countries, and has had his music featured on Democracy Now!, BBC, Al-Jazeera and other networks. His essays are published regularly on CounterPunch elsewhere, and the 200+ songs he makes available for free on the web have been downloaded more than a million times. Most importantly, he's really good. He will make you laugh, he will make you cry, he will make the revolution irresistible.
