Solo Square Dance is a one-person percussive dance show created and performed by Nic Gareiss commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Irish Dance Halls Act which banned citizens from dancing in homes. The show features new pieces inspired by this and other such dance bans, including the Elmore City, OK dancing ban that inspired the film Footloose and the most recently lifted dancing ban in Pound, VA (only lifted in 1999!) which required that dancing permits not be granted "to anyone who is not a proper person, nor to a person who is not a person of good moral character".  The 60-minute show, set in houses, explores the dialectic of public/private life and probes the subversive power of dancing+sounding bodies, recasting percussive dance as a vehicle of liberation and social transformation.

Coffee will be provided, please bring a dessert to share.

Bio:

Michigan-born dancer Nic Gareiss has been described by the Irish Times as “the human epitome of the unbearable lightness of being,” and "the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene” by the Boston Herald. His work re-imagines movement as a musical practice, recasting dance as medium that appeals to both eyes and ears. Gareiss draws from many percussive dance traditions, weaving together a dance technique facilitating his love of improvisation, traditional dance footwork vocabulary, and musical collaboration. He has concertized internationally for over ten years with many of the luminaries of traditional music, including Frankie Gavin, Dervish, Bill Frisell, Darol Anger, Bruce Molsky, Phil Wiggins, Buille, Solas, Liz Carroll, Martin Hayes, The Gloaming and The Chieftains. Nic holds a degree in Anthropology from Central Michigan University and a MA in Ethnochoreology from the University of Limerick. Gareiss' essay, "An Buachaillín Bán: Reflections on One Queer's Performance within Traditional Irish Music & Dance" appears in the book Meanings and Makings of Queer Dance edited by Clare Croft on Oxford University Presswww.nicgareiss.com

DAROL ANGER AND EMY PHELPS HOLIDAY SHOW
presented by notloB Music

Since 2007, notloB Music has been presenting “old-time, bluegrass, progressive string band, world, and Celtic concerts in unique listening room environments throughout the greater Boston area.” Its next concert will be world-renowned fiddler Darol Anger (David Grisman Quartet founding member, Republic of Strings, Mr Sun) and singer-songwriter Emy Phelps, with surprise special guests.

Friday, December 1, 2017, 7:30pm
Common House, 25 Half Moon Hill, Acton, MA
$20 advance
$25 cash at the door

Darol Anger on his holiday show: “We think that the midwinter season has always been a highly emotional and special time for human beings, and we mean to celebrate in music the many layers of spirituality and celebration that has always happened around this time. Emy's a genius at finding songs that elevate peoples' spirits, and her long career working with children has helped her hone her talent. We’ll bring some amazingly talented younger musicians that our audience will love. Our band is not afraid to tap deep emotions, whether they be humor, love, or wassailin’.”

"Emy & I take our job very seriously in any time of year, but especially now. Any serious entertainer needs to consider their role as a healer of some sort. Music has served this very purpose since it began thousands of years ago, and that hasn’t changed, no matter how many notes and chords we add in there. This is the time of year when everything seems to have died and we have to trust that everything will rise again. For most humans, this seems to be a time for reflection, for spiritual questioning and renewal, family, and celebration or mourning of what we have gained and lost throughout the previous year-or years.

"We believe that what people mostly could use right now is to be together in a positive environment which encourages sharing. This year, all Americans have had real setbacks and fractious difficulties and it seems certain that things will get worse next year. Everyone- and I mean everyone- will need spiritual strength for the challenges that are rising. We’re going to support that frame of mind in our concert, with some really beautiful songs from all traditions, and we’re going to encourage a lot of singing along."

notloB Music could not agree more. This will be its eighth collaboration with Darol, and fifth with Emy.
