Spring has arrived (we hope).
notloB will be celebrating Spring in our rented 1890 home, the gallery of Harvard’s first library.

As of this writing, we have three remaining 2024 booked concerts, but who knows, more can and probably will be added.
There are several ways to stay connected

First up: New to notloB and direct from Nashville, 7 time national fiddling champion Luke Bulla, Friday, April 19. Seats are going fast, so sending a reservation request via email ASAP is advised. We are fortunate to have Luke, as on this tour we are just one of two New England venues where he will be appearing on this tour,
Next up: On Saturday, June 1, notloB will welcome the return of Fódhla, bringing “both high energy and stellar artistry to the traditional music stage. This concert is presented in part by a grant from the Harvard Cultural Council.   Last but not least, Don White will return for his third annual notloB concert. Patrons who have seen Don in concert know what I mean by saying within 60 minutes you’ll be laughing and crying.   Help needed: On a personal note, I have reached 70 years and to continue doing this, could use a helping hand. One person is needed for the “box office”, checking in registered patrons / handling cash donations. Another person is needed to arrive ahead of showtime to help set up the room, and stay after to put chairs away. To connect, please send an email to notlobreservations@gmail.com   “Keep your lamp trimmed and burning”, and thank you for supporting live music in Harvard.

Luke Bulla

Friday, April 19, 2024, 7:30pm

Luke Bulla has been singing and playing music most of his life, touring with and singing in his family band from age four, Luke took up the fiddle at seven. Over the course of the next few years, he won the National Fiddle Contest (in Weiser, Idaho) six times in his respective age categories. His seventh win came in the Grand Champion division at age sixteen, making him the youngest to have earned the title at the time.

In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville to establish himself as a full time musician. He spent his early years in Tennessee playing fiddle in Ricky Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder, which earned him his first Grammy Award. Luke was a member of the John Cowan Band. Luke has also performed and/or recorded with Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Russ Barenberg Trio, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs, to name a few. In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Aoife O’Donovan and more. Since 2009, Luke has been touring with Lyle Lovett.

Luke released an LP, Who Loves You Better, produced by Bryan Sutton in May 2016. After many years as a sideman, Luke is currently touring the country playing solo performances.

Fódhla

Saturday, June 1,  2024, 7:30pm

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Harvard Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Welcome back Fódhla (concert #188, May 28, 2016) who is Ellery Klein, Nicole Rabata, and Bethany Wakeman.

About Fódhla (*…it’s pronounced foe-luh!)
Irish music from Portland and Boston
Fódhla brings both high energy and stellar artistry to the traditional music stage.
The trio’s sound is firmly rooted in the traditional Irish melodies and ornamentation that fiddler Ellery Klein and flute player Nicole Rabata honed during years spent abroad in Ireland’s cities Cork, Limerick, and Ennis. Fiddle and flute tunes are superbly supported by guitarist Bethany Waickman, whose inventive, tasteful chords unfold with driving rhythm perfected from years of playing for contradances.

Cognizant of their North American roots, Fódhla aims to appeal to a broad audience by bringing variety, inventive harmonies and unique arrangements to traditional music. A typical concert starts off with high-energy traditional sets of Irish reels and jigs. Fiddle and flute then trade melody and harmonies on a Québécois waltz paired with an elegant French bourrée. A joyful and toe-tapping pair of barndances soar out on a high note. Finally, the soft notes of guitar bring in a melancholy, exquisite slow air – music that brings out audible sighs from a rapt audience.

Bios

Fiddler Ellery Klein toured nationally with the Billboard-charting Irish music group Gaelic Storm from 2003-2007 and was a founding member of the all-female ensemble Long Time Courting. In 2015 she was invited to be a featured soloist with Duluth, MN’s Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra, performing Nickitas Demos’ Double Concert for Celtic and Bluegrass Fiddle. She earned an MA in Traditional Irish Music from the University of Limerick. Ellery teaches private fiddle and violin lessons at her home studio and Powers Music School, as well as early childhood music at preschools in the Boston area. www.elleryklein.net

Irish flutist Nicole Rabata is highly regarded in traditional Irish, classical, and Brazilian choro music circles. She has toured America and Europe. In 2014 she spent two months in India where she performed and taught music at the Gandhi Ashram School in the Himalayas. She spent four years in the west of Ireland where she immersed herself in the local music and was influenced by the playing of many great musicians. She is on the music faculty at Colby College and the University of Maine Augusta, and has an active private home studio in Portland. www.nicolerabata.com

Bethany Waickman is a guitarist based out of Portland, Maine. She grew up in a musical family in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York state. After college she spent some time traveling, hiking, and playing music in Ireland. Upon returning, she moved to Boston to focus on music. She co-founded the contra dance trio, Anadama, and is the guitarist for Vermont- based fiddler and singer Lissa Schneckenburger. She’s toured across the US, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, and Germany. A resident of Maine since 2013, Bethany is a mainstay of the Portland session scene and a guitarist in demand on the New England contra dance circuit.  www.bethanywaickman.com

Don White
Friday, October 18, 2024, 7:30pm

Don White is equal parts storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter, and has been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for 30 years. White’s arc as an award-winning songwriter and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn, MA across the country as hitchhiker, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses, and onto the stage with greats like Arlo Guthrie, Taj Mahal, Ritchie Havens, Patty Larkin, Bill Morrissey, Tom Rush, Louden Wainright III, and Christine Lavin, with whom he toured for 8 years all across North America in a co-bill called The Funny Side of the Street. At every point, White has been the ultimate observer, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband, a father, a seeker, and a joker.

As a storyteller, White has been featured at festivals around the country including the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Utah and Cave Run Storytelling Festival in Kentucky. Since 2015, he has joined master storytellers Bil Lepp and Bill Harley in Father’s Daze, a hilarious three-man storytelling show about the triumphs and tribulations of fatherhood. White is hilariously funny, but his humor always comes from his big heart.

White has released ten CDs, three live DVDs, and an two books: Memoirs of a C Student and the just released The Hitchhiking Years and 4 Other Stories. His latest album is Live at the Guthrie Center, available now. In 2011, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association, for his work with the community and that same year was given a key to the city in his hometown of Lynn, Massachusetts.

White is a riot on stage, a bona fide crowd pleaser. One of the most popular acts on the circuit. He plays an audience the way Leo Kottke plays a 12-string. - the Boston Globe

The Jeff Picker Band – presented by notloB Parlour Concerts

next concert

The Jeff Picker Band
Presented by notloB Parlour Concerts at Fivesparks, 7 Fairbank Street, Harvard MA 01451

Wednesday, March 15, 7:30pm

notloB is proud to present Jeff Picker and Eddie Barbash, veterans of our series when it was in Cambridge. With Eli Bishop and Frank Rische, the jazz quartet will perform material from Jeff’s first record, With the Bass in Mind, and recent release, Liquid Architecture.

Jeff Picker, double bass. As a youth, he gained national recognition as one of the most promising young jazz musicians of his generation. At age 18, he was named “Presidential Scholar for the Arts in Jazz” by the US Dept. of Education, and was awarded an artist grant by the National YoungArts Foundation, among other honors. He was also awarded a full tuition scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music, where he completed one year of coursework before matriculating at Columbia University.

For the past decade, Jeff has been touring and recording with many of the biggest names in bluegrass and folk music, including a 5-year run with Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. He performs and records frequently with Sarah Jarosz, East Nash Grass, and others. In 2023, he began touring with legendary progressive bluegrass band Nickel Creek.

Jeff’s solo material, including his debut record, “With the Bass in Mind,” and his sophomore release, “Liquid Architecture,” reimagines the contemporary string band, drawing on the harmonic, metric, and improvisational intrigue of his jazz background, while never straying too far from the front porch.

When he’s not on the road, Jeff is Nashville based, where he can be heard frequently around town and on the Grand Ole Opry.

Eddie Barbash plays American roots music on alto saxophone. He is a founding member of Jon Batiste Stay Human, the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He has performed with stars in almost every genre: jazz with Wynton Marsalis, classical with Yo-Yo Ma, rock with Lenny Kravitz, country with Vince Gill, bluegrass with Sierra Hull, funk with Parliament. He brings his horn and sensibility to Texas and Appalachian fiddle tunes, bluegrass, old time, R&B, soul, and classic New Orleans. He was raised in Oaxaca, Mexico, Atlanta, Georgia and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is 34 and lives in Brooklyn, but will soon move to Nashville.

Eli Bishop is an American violinist/mandolinist, composer, and arranger who is recognized for his virtuosity and versatility across multiple genres of music. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Eli has performed with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Lee Ann Womack, Maddie & Tae, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Video Game Orchestra, and as a member of the Grand Ole Opry’s house band. Eli has also worked as an arranger for Grammy-nominated video game composer Austin Wintory (composer of Journey, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate), and has recorded with Dolly Parton for Dollywood. His musical work spans many mediums of the entertainment industry, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s movie, Don Jon, as well as the upcoming Billy Crystal movie, Here Today. Minecraft: Pirates of the Caribbean features Eli’s solo violin work with orchestra. The Chicago Tribune has praised Eli’s “silken legato phrases, impeccable pitch and seemingly effortless technique in fast-moving passages…”

Frank Rische is a multi-talented musician and singer who grew up traveling and playing in a full-time family band since the age of 7. He frequently works alongside Jim Lauderdale and his sister Lillie Mae, and has been a choice touring and session musician/harmony singer to artists Tanya Tucker, Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack, Aubrie Sellers, Jenny Lynn, Ahi, Milly Raccoon, Sierra Ferrell, Charles Butler, Logan Ledger, The Howling Brothers and many more. Frank proudly endorses D’Addario strings, L.R. Baggs electronics, and plays a Collings acoustic guitar.

Hannah O'Brien & Grant Flick, presented by notloB Parlour Concerts

Hannah O'Brien & Grant Flick, presented by notloB Parlour Concerts
Fivesparks, 7 Fairbank Street, Harvard MA 01451

Tuesday, August 9, 7:30pm

notloB Parlour Concerts had planned to take the Summer off, but we've been asked to present a Celtic duo between their engagements in Cambridge and Portland.
Save gas, stay local!
Reservations requested through Eventbrite - https://tinyurl.com/notlobeventbrite

Hannah O’Brien and Grant Flick play a mix of original compositions and traditional pieces from various fiddling traditions. The duo began collaborating at University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, & Dance in 2019. They found common ground despite coming from different backgrounds with Hannah from Irish fiddling and Grant from American improvisational idioms. In August 2021 they released their first duo record, “Windward.” This album features a collection of their original tunes but also some of their takes on fiddling standards. Their arrangements have been worked up without notation and sometimes incorporate improvised sections. While the duo feels at home on double fiddle, they also change instrumentation often incorporating tenor guitar and nyckelharpa. Their musical interests are broad and as a result their programs showcase an eclectic assemblage of repertoire.

ADMISSION: By free-will offering, suggested donation adults $15-20; teens and seniors $10; children $5. 100% of patron donations go to the artists. Please make reservations through http://notlobmusic.eventbrite.com
