Betsy appears on four MCV albums, playing both violin and fife.

Jim MacConduibh, Guitar/Bouzouki
Jim MacConduibh has been active in the Boston music scene since 1982---as a drummer. As an antidote to the constant din of rock'n'roll, circus and military drums, he and wife Sarah MacConduibh became interested in the new-Celtic movement of the mid-1990's, playing with the likes of Skip Healy, Matt Glover, and the New Hampshire Strathspey & Reel Society. He is the survivor of myriad international tours, including Baghdad in 2007 , the 2010 Edinburgh Military Tattoo Salute to Australia in Sydney and 2012 Basel Tattoo. Longtime Director of Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums, Jim resides in West Medford with Sarah and five cats and a dog. Jim plays guitar, bouzouki and mandolin with Fellswater.

Sarah MacConduibh, Flute/Whistle
Sarah MacConduibh has been a fifer with the Middlesex County Volunteers Fifes & Drums (MCV) since 1984 . Sarah’s extensive performance resume with MCV has included recording eight full-length albums, tours to England, France, Ireland and Switzerland and local performances too numerous to list here. 2007 featured performances with the Boston Pops as well as a run at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. 2010 featured performances at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo's Salute to Australia in Sydney and four performances with the Boston Pops and 2012 found her in Switzerland for the Basel Tattoo. Sarah has played with several folk groups over the years on a variety of instruments, ranging from fiddle, flute, whistle and fife. Sarah plays whistle and flute with Fellswater.

Matthew Phelps, Smallpipes
Matthew Phelps began piping at the age of eight under the instruction of Pipe Major Thomas Shearer of Connecticut and had additional instruction at the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts in Nova Scotia. Matthew competes at the Professional level and has also competed over the years in the U.S., Canada and Scotland with the following bands: Trumbull and District Pipe Band of Connecticut, Gaelic College Pipe Band of Nova Scotia, Saint Andrews College Pipe Band of North Carolina, Tulach Ard Pipe Band and Stuart Highlanders of Massachusetts, and Halifax Regional Police Pipes & Drums of Nova Scotia. Matt led the Stuart Highlanders Pipe Band at the 2012 Basel Tattoo. Matthew currently works as a full time piping instructor and performer; he has opened concerts for Niamh Parsons, John Whelan, and J. P. Cormier. Matt plays smallpipes and border pipes with Fellswater.

"In this era of pop-driven acoustic music, notloB is keeping the folk tradition alive."
~ Jack Hardy

Greater Boston music patrons embrace all music genres, from classical to experimental and everything in between. Beginning November 1, patrons will have the opportunity to attend presentations of the Eliot Street Coffeehouse at the First Church in Jamaica Plain, Unitarian-Univeralist, located at 6 Eliot Street. “The space itself is just beautiful and welcoming as well. This is why I’m inspired to have more music performed here as a benefit to the artists, to the church, and to our community.  And more folks coming in to the space means greater awareness of the good work the church does via its food pantry and other social justice activities.”

THE BOMBADILS w/ CAT AND THE MOON
Friday, November 22

THE BOMBADILS are a ridiculous and kind-hearted bunch of rascals disguised as a four-piece folk band. Originating from Vancouver, Edmonton, and Halifax, they met in 2009 at McGill University's Schulich School of Music in Montréal, where they were pursuing their studies in jazz and classical music. These musical influences carry over into their love of folk music which includes Irish, bluegrass and Canadian and American old time.

JUST ADDED – CAT AND THE MOON!
CAT AND THE MOON is a contemporary Celtic-Bluegrass fusion group that was started in Boston Massachusetts in 2012. They have a wide range of styles including Irish, Bluegrass, originals, jazz fusion, and classical. Cat and the Moon so impressed us at their recent Lord Geoffrey presents they were offered this opening spot on the spot!

Dan Bui and Friends
Wednesday, November 20

Dan Bui is a mandolinist hailing from Austin, TX and a recent graduate of the Berklee College of Music. He was initially introduced to music through classical piano and violin lessons but it was his discovery of the mandolin in high school that inspired him to delve deeper into music. He came to the Berklee College of Music to expand his knowledge of traditional styles, improvisation, composition, and overall musicianship. In addition to spending a lot of time in Berklee's recording studios, Dan was fortunate enough to study with master musicians John McGann, Joe Walsh, Darol Anger, and Jason Anick. He has also learned just as much from other young musicians in the fertile Boston acoustic music scene.

For this special evening, Dan will be joined by some very talented Boston-area musicians (many of whom are also performing in the Outpost 186 series). They will be performing an eclectic mix of Dan's original music and tunes from the bluegrass and old-time traditions.

Molly Pinto Madigan and Friends
Saturday, November 30

Hailed for her "pure, sweet” singing style and her haunting compositions, Molly Pinto Madigan has performed extensively around the Boston area at venues such as Club Passim, Boston Celtic Music Festival, NEFFA, and the notloB Parlor Concerts. In 2009, she won first place in the Boston Folk Festival Songwriting Contest for her original song "Bound Away,” and she was recently awarded first place in the South Shore Folk Club's Ballad-Singing Competition as well as being named "Artist of the Year" at the Salem State University Music Awards. As a member of the teen bluegrass band Jaded Mandolin and soloist in the Family Folk Chorale, Molly gained recognition for her vocal and songwriting skills, sharing the stage with artists such as Claire Lynch, Scott Alarik, John Carter Cash, and Tracy Grammer.

Since her debut in the Boston folk scene, Molly has submerged herself in the dark, luscious world of ballads, drawn to their magic, and her original songs echo with the whisperings of the American and European traditional music.

New Coffeehouse In Jamaica Plain

Jamaica Plain music patrons embrace all genres, from classical to experimental and everything in between. Starting in November residents will have the opportunity to attend two presentations by the new Eliot Street Coffeehouse at the First Church in Jamaica Plain, Unitarian-Univeralist, located at 6 Eliot Street.

Eliot Street Coffeehouse is the result of a merger of First Church’s own “Eliot Street Soirée” series, and Jeff Boudreau’s not-for-profit “notloB Parlour Concerts”, presented since 2006 across the monument at the Loring-Greenough House.

“Eliot Street Soirées”, headed by Janna Maria Fröhlich, and a dedicated team of church volunteers, presented three concerts, Kombucha, a jazz trio, Fellswater, a Celtic quartet and John Muratore and Roberto Cassan, jazz/traditional Italian folk guitar and accordion duo. notloB’s history is a bit more extensive, having presented some 50 concerts at Loring-Greenough, its first being Sometymes Why (Aoife O’Donovan (Crooked Still), Kristin Andreassen (Uncle Earl) and Ruthy Ungar Merenda (The Mammals, Mike+Ruthy). Rushad Eggleston, Tristan Clairridge, Brittany Haas and Corey DiMario (all members of Crooked Still), Darol Anger (Republic of Strings, Turtle Island Quartet, David Grisman Quartet), Sharon Gilchrist, Lissa Schneckenburger, the Rowan Brothers, Tony Bird, Doug Lamey (which was something of a homecoming as his grandfather, Bill Lamey, owned a home on Greenough Street), Joey Abarta and dozens more performed there. See https://sites.google.com/site/notlobmusic/home/history for the full listing.

“Loring-Greenough, with its 18th century ambiance and acoustics was a wonderful venue, unfortunately the rent its owners (The Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club) proposed for what would have been our seventh year did not work in our model” Boudreau says. (After rent expense, 100% of the door donations went to the artists). “I have attended many contradances in First Parish’s hall, with its wood walls and floors and vaulted ceiling, the acoustics are such that we will continue the tradition set across the street by presenting bands who can perform without the need of sound reinforcement.”

“With community support, additional concerts will be presented in the hall, with the possibility of presentations in the stunning 250-plus seat sanctuary. We have additional ideas incubating, too early to disclose” hinted Boudreau, who will be scouting talent this weekend at Mike and Ruthy’s Summer Hoot at Jay Ungar and Molly Mason’s Ashoken Music and Dance Camp in New York and attending the first Celtic Crossroads festival in western Maine.

The other half of the blend is First Church in Jamaica Plain and Janna Maria Fröhlich.  The church has been a presence on the corner of Eliot, Centre and South Streets since 1769.  The current Sanctuary dates from 1854, and the Parish Hall from the 1880’s.  Janna, until last June when she retired to finish graduate work in music therapy, was the long-time vocal soloist and occasional pianist/harpist at First Church and has performed in many a service or concert in both the Parish Hall and Sanctuary.  Her own recently formed Celtic and originals ensemble, Heart Soul Voice, was the opener for Fellswater last year at the Soirée.  Says Janna, “The acoustics in the parish hall, built in the 1880’s, are nothing short of miraculous.  Whoever designed it was a genius.  I’ve stood in the furthest corner and heard the quietest notes of John Muratore’s guitar clear as a bell.  When I’ve performed in an acappella group on the stage, I could hear each other singer’s timbre and how it blended with mine.  The space itself is just beautiful and welcoming as well.  This is why I’m inspired to have more music performed here as a benefit to the artists, to the church, and to our community.  And more folks coming in to the space means greater awareness of the good work the church does via its food pantry and other social justice activities.”

The season:
Friday, November 1: Fellswater
Friday, November 22:
The Bombadils
Saturday, December 7: Berklee College of Music string quartets (TBA)

Tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets - http://www.brownpapertickets.com/
