THE BOMBADILS w/ Cat and the Moon, JP, 11/22

THE BOMBADILS w/ Cat and the Moon

Eliot Street Coffeehouse
First Parish Church of Jamaica Plain, 6 Eliot Street, JP
Friday, November 22
Doors 7:30, concert 8:00.
$10 students, seniors and the unemployed; $13 in advance; $15 at the door.

The Bombadils are a ridiculous and kind-hearted bunch of rascals disguised as a four-piece folk band. Originating from Vancouver, Edmonton, and Halifax, they met in 2009 at McGill University's Schulich School of Music in Montréal, where they were pursuing their studies in jazz and classical music. These musical influences carry over into their love of folk music which includes Irish, bluegrass and Canadian and American old time.
Anh Phung, on Irish whistles and flute, is a stunning presence and spunky improviser. She has twice been awarded the Galaxie Rising Star Award as well as 1st place in the Canadian Music Competition. She performs regularly with notable artists such as blues man Carl Tremblay and John McGale, of Offenbach. Anh plays as though through telepathic communication with kooky and happy-go-lucky fiddler and vocalist, Sarah Frank. Sarah has travelled the continent performing and studying with key figures of traditional folk music such as Peter Yarrow, (Peter, Paul, and Mary), Alasdair Fraser, Natalie Haas, Laura Cortese, and Pierre Shryer. Luke Fraser on guitar, mandolin, and lead vocals grew up on the musical traditions of Nova Scotia, where he has performed as part of the vibrant Maritime music scene, including The Rankins' own Red Shoe Pub and the Halifax Jazz festival. Evan Stewart, upright bass, has performed at the Montreal Jazz festival and has shared the stage with award-winning musicians such as Steve Turre (Best Trombone and Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz), Jim Head and Kent Sangster (Juno nomination, Western Canadian Music Award).
Coming together as The Bombadils, these four diverse musicians perform a combination of traditional and original music, both instrumental and vocal, both English and French, both improvised and through-composed. For the past three years they have been performing regularly throughout Québec at pubs and cafés, local dances, weddings and concerts. Since their graduation from McGill University's Schulich School of Music, The Bombadils have released their debut CD "Fill Your Boots!" and continue to perform across Canada.

It Takes a Community to Launch a New Coffeehouse

This Friday we launch a brand new music venue, and cannot succeed without your help! In the words of Pete Seeger, YOU are the yeast that makes the bread rise!
* We have the facility (wood-walled and floored 90 seat capacity hall and a 250 seat sanctuary)
* We have the core production team (a few more good volunteers would be nice)
* We have the artists
* ALL WE NEED NOW IS COMMUNITY SUPPORT!

Boston music patrons embrace all music genres, from classical to experimental and everything in between. Starting in November, patrons will have the opportunity to attend three presentations by the new Eliot Street Coffeehouse at the First Church in Jamaica Plain, Unitarian-Univeralist, located at 6 Eliot Street.

The coffeehouse is the result of a merger of Janna Maria Fröhlich's “Eliot Street Soirée” series and Jeff Boudreau’s “notloB Parlour Concerts”, presented since 2006 across the monument at the Loring-Greenough House.

The three-concert Fall season starts THIS FRIDAY
Friday, November 1 - FELLSWATER CD RELEASE PARTY, w/ ELIZABETH & BEN ANDERSON
Friday, November 22 - THE BOMBADILS w/ CAT AND THE MOON
Tuesday, December 3, 2-4pm, Darol Anger live in studio, Ken Field's "The New Edge", WMBR
Saturday, December 7, A TRIO OF BERKLEE STRING QUARTETS orchestrated by Darol Anger
...and if all goes well the plan is to continue in January, in both the beautiful wood-walled and floored (dance concerts, anyone?) parish hall and the gorgeous sanctuary.

But we cannot do it alone, we need community support. Here's what you can do:

1 - LEVERAGE SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE INTERNETS
*Like our page - https://www.facebook.com/6EliotStreet - and share it with friends. Can we get to 200 "likes" before our first concert 11/1?
*Click "going" to this event, to show support and indicate you have done #1 and are inclined to do #2 &/or #3.
*INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO THIS EVENT - to do so you will need to have "host" status, send a PM to Jeff Boudreau or Janna Frolich and we will gladly oblige.
*SPREAD THE WORD - Download this event's poster and put it up in your neighborhood, music shops, book shops, libraries, office, etc. Post this event URL-https://www.facebook.com/events/1405965179638125/ - add a few embellishing words to your Facebook wall or Twitter feed.
*If you have a blog, blog about it.
*If you have a radio program, mention it and the upcoming shows.
*If you subscribe to a listserv or have a newsletter/mailing list, share with friends and neighbors.

Remember, this is social media, you do not need to live in the greater Boston area to share the news with your Boston area friends!

New Coffeehouse In Jamaica Plain

Jamaica Plain music patrons embrace all genres, from classical to experimental and everything in between. Starting in November residents will have the opportunity to attend two presentations by the new Eliot Street Coffeehouse at the First Church in Jamaica Plain, Unitarian-Univeralist, located at 6 Eliot Street.

Eliot Street Coffeehouse is the result of a merger of First Church’s own “Eliot Street Soirée” series, and Jeff Boudreau’s not-for-profit “notloB Parlour Concerts”, presented since 2006 across the monument at the Loring-Greenough House.

“Eliot Street Soirées”, headed by Janna Maria Fröhlich, and a dedicated team of church volunteers, presented three concerts, Kombucha, a jazz trio, Fellswater, a Celtic quartet and John Muratore and Roberto Cassan, jazz/traditional Italian folk guitar and accordion duo. notloB’s history is a bit more extensive, having presented some 50 concerts at Loring-Greenough, its first being Sometymes Why (Aoife O’Donovan (Crooked Still), Kristin Andreassen (Uncle Earl) and Ruthy Ungar Merenda (The Mammals, Mike+Ruthy). Rushad Eggleston, Tristan Clairridge, Brittany Haas and Corey DiMario (all members of Crooked Still), Darol Anger (Republic of Strings, Turtle Island Quartet, David Grisman Quartet), Sharon Gilchrist, Lissa Schneckenburger, the Rowan Brothers, Tony Bird, Doug Lamey (which was something of a homecoming as his grandfather, Bill Lamey, owned a home on Greenough Street), Joey Abarta and dozens more performed there. See https://sites.google.com/site/notlobmusic/home/history for the full listing.

“Loring-Greenough, with its 18th century ambiance and acoustics was a wonderful venue, unfortunately the rent its owners (The Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club) proposed for what would have been our seventh year did not work in our model” Boudreau says. (After rent expense, 100% of the door donations went to the artists). “I have attended many contradances in First Parish’s hall, with its wood walls and floors and vaulted ceiling, the acoustics are such that we will continue the tradition set across the street by presenting bands who can perform without the need of sound reinforcement.”

“With community support, additional concerts will be presented in the hall, with the possibility of presentations in the stunning 250-plus seat sanctuary. We have additional ideas incubating, too early to disclose” hinted Boudreau, who will be scouting talent this weekend at Mike and Ruthy’s Summer Hoot at Jay Ungar and Molly Mason’s Ashoken Music and Dance Camp in New York and attending the first Celtic Crossroads festival in western Maine.

The other half of the blend is First Church in Jamaica Plain and Janna Maria Fröhlich.  The church has been a presence on the corner of Eliot, Centre and South Streets since 1769.  The current Sanctuary dates from 1854, and the Parish Hall from the 1880’s.  Janna, until last June when she retired to finish graduate work in music therapy, was the long-time vocal soloist and occasional pianist/harpist at First Church and has performed in many a service or concert in both the Parish Hall and Sanctuary.  Her own recently formed Celtic and originals ensemble, Heart Soul Voice, was the opener for Fellswater last year at the Soirée.  Says Janna, “The acoustics in the parish hall, built in the 1880’s, are nothing short of miraculous.  Whoever designed it was a genius.  I’ve stood in the furthest corner and heard the quietest notes of John Muratore’s guitar clear as a bell.  When I’ve performed in an acappella group on the stage, I could hear each other singer’s timbre and how it blended with mine.  The space itself is just beautiful and welcoming as well.  This is why I’m inspired to have more music performed here as a benefit to the artists, to the church, and to our community.  And more folks coming in to the space means greater awareness of the good work the church does via its food pantry and other social justice activities.”

The season:
Friday, November 1: Fellswater
Friday, November 22:
The Bombadils
Saturday, December 7: Berklee College of Music string quartets (TBA)

Tickets are available through Brown Paper Tickets - http://www.brownpapertickets.com/

The community, especially those interested in volunteering, is invited to send inquiries by email to eliotstreetcoffeehouse@gmail.com

notloB Parlour Concerts Seeks New Home

notloB Parlour Concerts Seeks New Home

After six years and 51 concerts at the Loring-Greenough House, notloB Parlour Concerts will no longer be produced at at the historic venue. We thank the Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club for its hospitality and the memories.

The not-for-profit series will continue at a private residence in Watertown and possibly a second private residence also west of Boston. We welcome suggestions and offers to host the series in other listening room settings (a private home, a church parlour, a museum...) in Jamaica Plain or the greater Boston area. Please send an email to notlobreservations at gmail dot com.

Joey Abarta, Paddy League
and Jackie O'Riley,
with special guest Nathan Gourley!

Traditional Irish music on the uilleann pipes, supported by Greek bouzuki and old style step.

Joey Abarta has spent the last ten years of his life touring North America, Europe, and Asia, teaching and performing music on the uilleann pipes. A Los Angeles native, he first received instruction on the pipes from Dubliner Pat D’Arcy, a founding member of the Southern California Uilleann Pipers Club. His musical skills have been further honed by several visits to Ireland, a year-long stint working in Japan, and continuing relationships with master pipers. In August of 2009, Joey’s accomplished playing won him an All-Ireland championship, placing second worldwide at the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann. Currently based in Boston, Joey divides his attention between performance, teaching, and recording. In addition to performing solo, he tours with Mick Moloney and the group The Green Fields of America; while at home, he organizes the meetings of the Boston Pipers Club, teaches for Comhaltas’ Boston Music School, and organizes various traditional music concerts and events. His debut solo album is due out this June.

Paddy League's
intuitive accompaniment style — on bodhran, guitar, and bouzouki — provides irresistible rhythm and a distinctive traditional sound. With a life-long passion for both Irish and Greek traditional music, Paddy is a multi-instrumentalist who is also influenced by many of the world’s vernacular and art music traditions, from the Mediterranean to Brazil. He exhibits vitality and a natural touch on every instrument, and an exceptional ability to respond to often hidden nuances in a tune. His renderings of traditional songs, along with many of his own instrumental compositions, highlight his multi-faceted musicianship and bring great variety to his music. Paddy has performed extensively throughout North America, Brazil, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and Europe, and been featured on over one hundred recordings.

Jackie O'Riley
began Irish set dancing as a teenager in the Boston area. She has gone on to study traditional step dancing and sean-nós dancing with Kieran Jordan and with a variety of teachers in workshop settings in the US and Ireland. She studied abroad at University College, Cork where she spent much time set dancing and learning traditional steps. This past summer she attended the Blás summer school at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. She has performed in "A Christmas Celtic Sojourn," “A Saint Patrick’s Day Celtic Sojourn,” “Celebrate!” at the JFK Library and Museum, and has choreographed and performed in the Boston Celtic Music Festival. She has been teaching non-competitive step dancing and Irish social dancing for the past two years.

Fiddler Nathan Gourley hails from Madison, Wisconsin, where he grew up in a musical family that often traveled to folk and fiddle festivals across the country. Now based in the Twin Cities, Nathan puts his passion for Irish music into practice as a member of The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, The Doon Ceili Band, and O’Rourke’s Feast. He can also be found at the MSP airport en route to many yearly excursions to Ireland, New York, Chicago and other hotbeds of traditional Irish music.
