notloB is Coming out of Hibernation, presenting Rushad Eggleston December 5 & 15

notloB Parlour Concerts has been in a long hibernation (its last concert, entitled "Celebrate Midsummer Eve with Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert" was June, 20, 2018), waiting for a "special" artist to present for its 200th. That "special" artist has turned out to be the one and only Rushad Eggleston, founding member of Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings, Crooked Still, and Tornado Rider, and six-time notloBBer.

Concert #200 will be Thursday, December 5, appropriately at Outpost 186 in Inman Square, Cambridge, a familiar notloB haunt, which was the home to 29 presentations between February, 2013 and July 2015; coincidentally, the first there was #100, headlined by Eggleston.  #201 and 202 will be Sunday, December 15 at a new venue in Harvard, MA, its 19th century library re-purposed as a gallery/performing arts center, "Fivesparks."

Jeff Boudreau, notloB’s chief cook and bottle washer, has had his eye on Fivesparks for some time and actually had two concerts planned but first a construction delay then a completion delay nixed both. "The first cancellation was particularly hard to take", opines Boudreau, as it would have been a fabulous birthday present. Fivesparks construction did not began until two months after the planned date. The second had been planned for March, 2019.

"But now we're back with a trifecta", explains Boudreau. Rushad called just a couple weeks ago, not knowing I had moved to Harvard in 2017, asking for a "Boston gig". After establishing I was now 35 miles west of Inman Square, he asked if we could do two gigs, one each in Cambridge and Harvard. Having seen Rushad perform numerous times for children at the Rhythm and Roots (Rhode Island) and Grey Fox Bluegrass (New York) festivals I came up with the idea of two Harvard concerts, an afternoon children's and evening adult. That is how things evolve when working with Rushad." Boudreau is hopeful the Eggleston concert will be the first of a new curated acoustic music series with old notloB friends, who include notable fiddlers Darol Anger, Brittany Haas, Natalie Haas, Hanneke Cassel. See the complete artist list at https://www.facebook.com/pg/notloBParlourConcerts/about/

About the artist:
“Eggleston is a
n eclectic, whimsical, inventive performer and personality…a cello player with a difference. Calling himself the Ambassador of Sneth and Wild Cello Goblin, Eggleston improvises in fiddle styles on the cello. Now touring the world—from Italy to Belgium and beyond—as a solo performer on cello, vocals, and kazoo, he wears a jester costume and sings in his own imaginary language.”

Gigs:
Thursday, December 5, 8pm at Outpost 186, 186 Hampshire Street, Cambridge, MA

notloB Music Presents DAVE ROWE, July 31, Cambridge

notloB Music Presents DAVE ROWE
Friday, July 31
Doors 7:45, Concert 8:00
Outpost 186, 186 Hampshire Street, Cambridge

Maine native, Dave Rowe, grew up with folk music flowing through his veins. The son of a member of folk trio Schooner Fare, there was always a sort of expectation that Dave would “join the family business,” which he did at the tender age of 15. With thirteen critically-acclaimed recordings under his belt—by himself and with his various bands—and a career in the music business that has endured for some 26 years, Dave is a force to be reckoned with. A long-time staple of pubs and music halls throughout New England, Dave has spent more than half of his life playing sing-alongs having a rollicking good time for himself. He has decided it’s time to take his well-honed solo show on the road to concert halls and festivals around the US and Canada.

Having cut his on-stage teeth on the rough edge of Irish pubs, Dave is a singular entertainer, able to relate to even the most reticent audience members and get them singing along. He firmly believes that singing is balm for the soul, and that singing together—whether in choirs, in pubs, at concerts, or in kitchen parties—is a primary part of the human experience (it certainly has been for him).

When Dave is not touring, you can find him writing songs on his back porch at his home in Portland, working on the house or in his small yard, enjoying the sea air, and walking or bicycling and enjoying the beauty of Maine’s largest city.

Inman Square
Cambridge
Friday, June 12, 8pm

Half Polish-half Colombian guitarist Stash (short for Stanislaw) Wyslouch grew up on heavy metal before submerging himself in bluegrass and country music. His history in hard rock still manifests itself in his propensity for wringing unexpected sounds out of his guitar and belting at the top of his vocal range.

Since graduating from the Berklee College of Music in 2010 Stash has been touring full-time with the progressive bluegrass band, Rounder Recording Artists The Deadly Gentlemen having released two albums as guitarist and singer of the group, "Carry me to Home" (2011) and "Roll me, Tumble Me" (2013). His resume also includes membership in The Boston Boys, Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers, and a US-State department sponsored tour with The Earth Stringband in 2011, being the first all-American band to play in the country of Timor-Leste.
With Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers in Joliette, QC at the Memoires et Racines festival July 2012

Stash has played at many well-known festivals and venues including Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival (Oak Hill, NY), Old Settler's Music Festival (Austin, TX), Northwest String Summit (Portland, OR), DelFest (Cumberland, MD), Rockygrass (Lyons, CO), Big Sky Big Grass (Big Sky, MT), Merlefest (Wilkesboro, NC), Savannah Music Festival (Savannah, GA), River City Roots (Missoula, MT) among some of them. His touring career has taken him across the globe to Sweden, Denmark, the UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Cambodia, Korea, Japan and Laos.

Stash has shared the stage with The Del McCoury band, David Grisman, The Yonder Mountain Stringband, Sarah Jarosz, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Michael Daves, Darol Anger, Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters, and more. Outpost 186
186 Hampshire Street
Cambridge
Students/seniors $8, all others $10
Tickets

Nate has played for notloB in so many bands and we have crossed paths at so many festivals and concerts (he is fast becoming our favorite acoustic bass artist) we cannot remember when we discussed doing a feature concert, probably at the Blue Hat, Yeah! concert after he played a Norweigen mazurka that he told me of his new project....and here it is!

Nate Sabat, bass
A graduate of the voice program at New York City’s renowned LaGuardia High School, Nate Sabat’s musical roots are in choral singing. However, he started playing bass just before he began at LaGuardia, and, years later, was accepted to the Berklee College of Music as an upright bass principal. There, he has made it a goal to delve into the thriving Boston acoustic music scene, inside and outside of Berklee. He has only recently began playing Scandanavian folk music, and intends to continue to pursue it, hopefully in Sweden or Norway for an extended amount of time.

Elise Boeur, violin and hardingfele

Canadian fiddler Elise Boeur ties together diverse influences with a deceptively light touch - her distinctive, silvery tone belongs to a world of its own. Following her intensive study of Norwegian traditional music at Høgskolen i Telemark, Boeur is joyfully exploring the reaches of contemporary Scandinavian folk music on violin and hardingfele.

Sumaia Jackson, fiddle
Boston-based fiddler, Sumaia Jackson, has roots in Scottish and Irish fiddle styles, and for the past few years has delved into the rich tradition of Appalachian Old Time and American fiddle. Throughout her years on the West Coast, Sumaia was immersed in California's diverse music scene, blending elements of Jazz, Bluegrass, Scandinavian and Celtic styles. She continues to incorporate aspects of each of these styles into her playing creating a vibrant, groovy sound.

Outpost 186 is an all-ages venue.

"Together, Alex and BB explore the roots of acoustic music, playing a collection of folk songs, bluegrass tunes, and their own compositions which reflect their wide range of influences, including bluegrass, jazz, old-time and celtic music. Using diverse styles of banjo, guitar, vocals, fiddle and mandolin, they seamlessly blend genres in their arrangements of traditional and original tunes."

About It

At age 17, Alex Rubin turned his interests from classical violin to bluegrass guitar, and has yet to reconsider. As a high-school student in Boston, MA, he quickly formed a band, The Wooden Spoons, and recorded at Hi-n-Dry, the Cambridge recording studio founded by Morphine frontman Mark Sandman. Making use of the vibrant Boston bluegrass scene, Alex studied privately with Berklee professor John McGann as he completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He has since moved back to Boston, where he works as a performer and guitar teacher.

Since picking up the banjo at age 12, Catherine (BB) Bowness has travelled throughout New Zealand, Australia and the United States playing and teaching bluegrass music. At age 15, she received the Frank Winter memorial award at the Auckland Folk Festival allowing her to travel to the USA, where she won the Uncle Dave Macon banjo contest in Murfreesboro, TN. She was the first banjo player accepted to the New Zealand School of Music, receiving a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance. In 2013, BB was one of just sixteen young musicians selected to attend the Savannah Acoustic Music Seminar, studying with world-class artists such as Julian Lage, Mike Marshall and Darol Anger. Since re-locating to Boston last year she has kept busy recording, performing and teaching in and around Massachusetts.

Lord Geoffrey Presents Dylan McKinstry and Friends Concert and Pickin' Party

Lord Geoffrey's acoustic music series in Cambridge, featuring rising young talent from theBerklee College of Music and New England Conservatory, continues. The third of eight concerts is Wednesday, October 23, Dylan McKinstry and Friends!

The concerts are presented at Outpost 186, 186-1/2 Hampshire Street, Inman Square, Cambridge where there is plenty of space and on-street parking / close to the T.  It's an art gallery with plenty of room to move, not a bar where artists compete with loud conversations and blaring televisions, or a cramped listening room where patrons are packed into tiny tables. Patrons are encouraged to bring string instruments for the after-concert pickin' party.

Darol Anger (Berklee) and Tanya Kalmanovitch (NEC) are Lord Geoffrey's Fall season consultants.

Dylan McKinstry is 24 year old multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer working and living in Minneapolis, MN and attending NEC.

Dylan, who has been called “…a vibrant young acoustic music architect with a bold new approach to guitar playing…’’ has always been a fond proponent of story-telling and the language of song. Within a single song McKinstry will sashay seamlessly between the usual suspects: jazz, blues, folk-funk, classical and modal middle-eastern with a hint of disco. With ease, he dances in and out of styles and genres, leaving his foot-tapping audiences pleasantly plump with melodies to hum. Dylan’s athletic, high caliber technique and mature compositional style can only be compared to the great guitarists of today, and has allowed him to turn the 6 string guitar into a sonic mélange. He has secured himself a place at the ”big kids table” of musicians, and is widely acclaimed by fellow guitar players like Dean Magraw, Andy Mckee and Michael Gulezian as being one of the most promising young guitarists of his time.

Dylan started as a session player at the age of 8, mostly as a percussionist, after it became clear that his passions stretched far beyond whimsical recreation. He has since performed on dozens of records, along side Pete Ostrushko, Larry Long, Meredith Fierke, Kurt Jorgensen, Paul Mayasich, and many others. His openness to new ideas, his thoughtfulness and range as a musician, and his ease in the studio has made him a sought after session player throughout the twin cities.

Dylan has attended a handful of exclusive seminars held by some of the top guitarists in the world. Cannington, Ontario was the first of many stops, where he studied in a small group setting with guitarists Don Ross and Andy McKee, both of whom took a liking to Dylan immediately and said of his music ”…Cool!”. From there he flew to Paris, and found himself in the little village of Chateau-Thierry at the home of French guitarist Pierre Bensusan. Besides the allure of fresh baguettes every morning, he found himself completely at ease and inspired in this kind of learning environment, and he left there with a head bursting with new ideas.
Out of High school, McKinstry began playing full-time as a soloist and as a sit in musician for Minneapolis bands. It was in this capacity that he honed his skills as a Mandolin and Mandola player, and has since found that his savvy as a soloist and mason of melodies lends itself well to ensemble playing. He is currently working closely with twin cities recording artist Meredith Fierke as a producer, songwriter, and general team player on her new album, which it slated to be released in the late summer of 2012.

He has shared the stage with Dean Magraw, Dan Schwartz, Little River Band, Brandi Carlyle, The Minnesota Orchestra, Alison Scott, Needtobreath, and many more! He is currently performing, producing and recording with twin cities recording artist Meredith Fierke. He also continues to do solo performances as a guitar player/singer.

Happy Birthday, WMBR

With studios located deep in the bowels of MIT's Walker Memorial Building, independent college / community radio station WMBR exemplifies the "third model" of how a radio station can be structured*. Today WMBR celebrates its fifty-first anniversary. In the words of Eli Polonsky, one of the producer/hosts of "60's-70's Lost and Found",
‎51 years ago today, students at MIT completed an electronics project, threw the switch, and put WTBS 88.1 FM, the MIT college and community radio station, on the air with ten watts! Still student-run and maintained and programmed by an all-volunteer student and community staff, WMBR now serves greater Boston and northeastern Massachusetts on the air with 720 watts, and the world online at http://www.wmbr.org/, with unique original non-commercial programming not heard elsewhere. Happy 51'st to WMBR!~Eli Polonsky

From its own "about" page,
WMBR is a federally licensed FM radio station, operating at 88.1 MHz from the campus of MIT. Our signal can be heard in most of eastern Massachusetts at 88.1 FM, 365 days a year, 20-24 hours per day. WMBR is a noncommercial, all volunteer radio station. None of its members are paid for its efforts. The majority of WMBR's funding comes from listener donations with additional support from MIT.WMBR's unique and innovative programming ranges from hip-hop to classical, punk rock to jazz, blues to celtic fiddle tunes. We offer the opportunity for MIT students and community members to learn about music, radio engineering, audio production techniques, electrical engineering, acoustics, news reporting and how to manage a small business. The offices and studios of WMBR are located in the basement of the Walker Memorial Building at 142 Memorial Drive (next to the Tennis Courts at the intersection of Ames St. and Memorial Dr.).Our program guide is available online, and on the front door of our studios (MIT Room 50-030). It changes within the first few weeks of each MIT semester (Fall, Spring, Summer).

*Community and independent college are types of radio service that offer a third model of radio broadcasting beyond commercial and public service. Community and independent college stations serve geographic communities and communities of interest. They broadcast content that is popular to a local/specific audience but which may often be overlooked by commercial/mass-media and so-called "public" broadcasters.

Community and independent college radio stations are operated, owned, and driven by the communities they serve. Community radio is not-for profit and provides a mechanism for facilitating individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own diverse stories, to share experiences, and in a media rich world to become active creators and contributors of media.

In many parts of the world, community radio acts as a vehicle for the community and voluntary sector, civil society, agencies, NGOs & citizens to work in partnership to further community development as well as broadcasting aims.
