How to make a great song suck, and vice versa

In these two pair of videos we see how a great artist can make a sucky song great, and how marginally talented pop artists can make a great song suck.

The first pair is Richard Thompson's "Keep your distance", done in a slogging, countrified manner by Buddy Miller and Shawn Colvin, with Byron House on bass and Brian Owings on drums.at the Country Music Hall of Fame, Nashville Tennessee on August 24, 2010....
Compare with the original, done as a ballad, by RT at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, a highlight of the Americana Music Association conference, September 2012.
The second pair is Brittany Spears mega pop hit "Oops...I Think I Did it Again"...
Compare with RT's vastly improved cover ("taken from a crass, pop artist, just my kind of person...") done in a 16th century style, taken from his "1000 Years Of Popular Music" tour....

Just goes to prove a great song can be made to suck and a sucky song can be made to sound great. The difference is the the degree of the artists' talent and abilities.
